  1. Why are Reading and Writing Important?

  3. Why is Reading Important? • 1.  Reading is fundamental to function in today's society.  There are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.  That is a scary thought - especially for their children.  Filling out applications becomes impossible without help.  Reading road or warning signs is difficult.  Even following a map becomes a chore.

  4. Why is Reading Important? 2.  Reading is a vital skill in finding a good job. 3.  Reading develops the mind. 4.  Reading is how we discover new things.

  6. Why is Reading Important? 5.  Reading develops the imagination. 6.  Reading develops the creative side of people.

  8. Why is Reading Important? 7.  Reading is key in developing a good self image.  Non-readers or poor readers often have low opinions of themselves and their abilities. 8.  Good reading skills improve spelling.

  10. Why is Reading Important? 9.  Ideas written down have changed the destiny of men and nations.

  12. Why is Reading Important? 10.  The power of written ideas communicated through reading is a foundational reason why some governments oppose free and honest communication.  Illiterate people are easier to control and manipulate.  They cannot do their own research and thinking. They must rely on what they are told.

  14. WHAT HAPPENS IF KIDS DON'T LEARN TO READ AND READ WELL: • The Coalition for Juvenile Justice (2001) reports that 82 percent of prison inmates are high school dropouts, and a very high proportion of them cannot read. (Adolescent Literacy: A National Reading Crisis) • More than one third of all juvenile offenders read below the fourth-grade level. (Adolescent Literacy: A National Reading Crisis) • Every school day in America, 3,000 students drop out -- the majority of them are poor readers. Students with below grade level reading skills are twice as likely to drop out of school as those who can read on or above grade level. (Adolescent Literacy: A National Reading Crisis)

  15. WHAT HAPPENS IF KIDS DON'T LEARN TO READ AND READ WELL: • Forecasts that by 2018, 63 percent of all jobs will require at least some postsecondary education. • It was estimated that a single state's employers will have to pay almost $40 million a year to provide remedial training in reading, writing, and mathematics to its employees if the current trends continue. (Achieve, Inc. 2004) • The United States placed 16th out of 21 OECD (Organization of Economic Co-Operation and Development) countries surveyed for high school graduation rates. (Educational Testing Service 2007)

  16. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN KIDS WHO CANNOT READ BECOME ADULTS WHO CANNOT READ • Among adults at the lowest level of literacy proficiency, 43% live in poverty. Among adults with strong literacy skills, only 4% live in poverty. (First Book) • One in every 100 U.S. adults 16 and older is in prison or jail in America (about 2.3 million in 2006). About 43 percent do not have a high school diploma or equivalent and 56 percent have very low literacy skills. (The National Center for Family Literacy)

  17. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN KIDS WHO CANNOT READ BECOME ADULTS WHO CANNOT READ • If the male graduation rate were increased by only 5 percent, the nation would see an annual savings of $4.9 billion in crime-related costs. (Alliance for Excellent Education) • The average annual income for a high school dropout in 2005 was $17,299, compared to $26,933 for a high school graduate, a difference of $9,634. (Alliance for Excellent Education)

  18. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN KIDS WHO CANNOT READ BECOME ADULTS WHO CANNOT READ • There is a distinct correlation between the Literacy Levels (1-5, 5 being the highest literacy level) and participation in the workforce. While only 49% of Level 1 adults report being active in the workforce, in comparison 77% of adults in Level 3 and 91% of adults in Level 5 are participating in the workforce. (2005) (Educational Testing Service) • It is suggested that adults that place amongst the lower literacy levels are not only less-skilled for the changing employment environment, but are given less opportunities to engage in programs to acquire requisite skills and job training. (Educational Testing Service)

  19. Why is Writing Important? • Words are the building blocks of life.  You are, right now, the result of words that you have heard or read and believed.  What you become in the future will depend on the words you believe about yourself now.  People, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words.  Think about it.

  20. Why is Writing Important? It seems like a silly question, but it is very important to be able to express yourself well.  Our writings precede us, or introduce us.  For example, when we apply for a job or to enroll in a school, we need to submit a resume and sometimes a cover letter, or when sending e-mails to someone we don’t actually know well or haven’t met yet (work partners, customers, or even responding on behalf of the company you work for).  If we make a bad (or illegible) impression, the outcome for us may not be favorable.

  21. Why is Writing Important? Poor writing may cost a lot; it may lead to misunderstanding and misconstruing due to sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling problems.

  22. Rewrite & Punctuate a woman without her man is nothing

  23. What meaning would you like to convey? A woman without her man is nothing. OR A woman: without her, man is nothing.

  24. Why is Writing Important? • We need to write well for the following reasons: • To translate, communicate, and materialize our ideas and thoughts into accessible documents that are useful to ourselves and others • To report our work in informative, concise, and professional formats

  25. Why is Writing Important? • When writing, we are sending a message to our readers about who we are.  Therefore, we need to be clear, focused, and accurate so as not to be misunderstood, underestimated, or ignored.

  26. During an acceptance speech at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards, Will Smith shared what he believes are the “keys to life.” • Running: Why running? When your running there’s a little person that talks to you and that little person says, oh I’m tired, my lungs are about to pop off, I’m so hurt, I’m so tired, there’s no way I could possibly continue, and you want to quit, right? That person, if you learn how to defeat that person, when you’re running, you will learn how to not quit when times get hard in your life.” • Reading: The reason that reading is so important, there have mean millions and billions and billions and gazillions of people that have lived before all of us, there’s no new problem you can have, with your parents, with school, with a bully, with anything. There’s no problem you can have that someone hasn’t already solved and wrote about it in a book.” • So the keys to life are running and reading.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqmRVJ-zhIQ
