  2. Overview • ODAA Roster • Significant Accomplishments and On-going Activities • Action Items • Satellite Data Requests

  3. ODAARoster Sub-groups • Conventional data • Satellite data • Satellite data assimilation

  4. JAG/ODAA Roster

  5. JAG/ODAA Roster

  6. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities Environmental Satellite Data Annex andTechnical Reference -1 Approved: Completes transition from SPP to NOPC/COPC management structure MOA DAPE Signed Sep 08 ESDA Signed Oct 09 Technical Reference 1 Implemented Oct 09

  7. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities • Satellite data requests Terminate transmission of ATOVS BUFR data products to AFWA Requestor:AFWA/2WXG Status: Completed – Closed Transmit N-19 AMSU-A data products to AFWA Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Completed -- Closed Transmit N-19 LAC & HRPT 1b data products to NAVOCEANO Requestor: NAVOCEANO Status: Completed – Closed Transmit N-19 GAC SST data products to NOAA/NESDIS/FNMOC Requestor: NOAA/NESDIS Status: Completed -- Closed

  8. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities • Acquiring METOP GOME ozone products • Acquiring high resolution (12.5km) quick scat data • Acquiring new MODIS winds from University of Wisconsin in Beta • mix of Aqua and Terra data • reduced latency and expanded coverage compared to single satellite winds

  9. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities • Acquired new BUFR formatted wave height data from NAVO • BUFR format had changed • Coordinated changes and implemented operational integration • For wave height assimilation and NCODA • Acquisition of the NWP ARGMET data from AFWA for COAMPS Land Surface Model • NCEP and FNMOC collaborating on track checking QC software comparisons for BUOY and Ship reports

  10. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities • GRAVITE – NPP Proxy Data Generation • IPO GRAVITE is working to establish a central NPP Proxy data source for prelaunch activities • All three proxy streams running continuously on GRAVITE in October with 2 month data window • All data available for random access via GTP in October • ATBDs, data characterization, and format confirmation done by Thanksgiving. • Aircraft Data QC code improvement • NCEP has tested NRL’s aircraft QC code • NRL code found significantly better than NCEPs older code • NCEP recommended longer time-window, better QC logic for groups of reports with incorrect location information

  11. JAG/ODAA Action Items • Conventional Data Sub Group Action Items 2007-3.2-C BUFR bulletin data type and description information for OPCs. • NCEP-developed application derives the type of data contained in BUFR bulletins • Application will be moved to NWS/TOC operations to generate BUFR description products • Products will be made accessible (preferably by web page) to the OPCs. • Applies to both conventional and satellite BUFR data

  12. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2009-1.1-C Comparison of Fixed Weather Site Dictionaries • Verifying correct station location and elevation • Upper air phase of the site comparisons is complete • Summary of significant differences has been completed • Impact test was run on the environmental modeling center global forecast system with positive results • Next phase: comparison of surface dictionaries

  13. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2009-4.1-C Provide NCEPs station location error findings to WMO to correct station location information • AFWA has submitted the list to WMO 2009-4.2-C Create email notification list for conventional data problem notifications. • OPCs and other significant conventional data users may not be receiving notification of conventional data problems when they are discovered by NCEP or other OPCs.

  14. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2009-5.1-C NWS Gateway Data Request Procedures • Develop clear and comprehensive guidance on routine and priority requests for operational data • Distribute to users and maintain on JAG/ODAA web page 2009-5.2-C Obtain Radiosonde Replacement System (RRS) Update • Users need RRS implementation/integration schedules • Need to know when data will be made available in WMO sanctioned BUFR format with GPS coordinates

  15. JAG/ODAA Action Items • Satellite DataSub Group Action Items 2008-4.1-S Transition of EOS data from Goddard (R&D) to NESDIS (Ops). Status: Full suite of MODIS data is flowing to AFWA. Closed Note: data will flow to FNMOC with new JAG/CCM initiated DATMS-U upgrade

  16. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2008-8.7-SAATSR, MSG & AMSRE SST Data from NAVO to FNMOC. Status: Completed and added to TR-1. Closed 2008-8.8-S NOAA assistance to NAVO in acquiring future altimetry data from Altika (CNSS –France/India) and Sentinel 3 (ESA/EUMETSAT) satellites. • Chinese HY2 data is no longer feasible and was removed as a potential source • NESDIS is currently working on an agreement for Altika (launch 2010) and plans to similarly pursue Sentinel 3 (launch 2012) satellite data.

  17. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2009-4.3-S Draft a consolidated OPC data request to NESDIS to obtain level 1b MODIS and IASI data for conversion to proxy NPOESS HDF5 products for testing. • IPO GRAVITE is working to establish a central NPP Proxy data source for prelaunch activities • Apply IPO created software to convert data into proxy NPOESS VIIRS and CRIS/ATMS HDF-5 like data • Send data, encode, and make available to OPC's and JCSDA • IT infrastructure testing at first • As test data sets mature and NPOESS data formats and science sensor data are made available, will also go after that data.

  18. JAG/ODAA Action Items 2009-4.4-SInclude planned program, project, initiative information into TR-1 (new section IV). • NPP data flow plans from AFWA to FNMOC and NAVO • Initiative to leverage upper air mass and wind data from the European Space Agency’s Atmospheric Dynamics Mission, Aeolus research satellite. • DATMS-U upgrade information

  19. JAG/ODAA Action Items Satellite DataAssimilation Sub Group Action Items 2009-4.6-SDAGoes Hourly Winds Product • NESDIS produces an hourly GOES wind product • FNMOC is interested in operational access to this data for testing for operational NWP use.

  20. Satellite Data Requests 2009-7 Rain Rate EDRs. Level 2 Data, EOS-AQUA AMSR-E Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Open 2009-8 Rain Rate EDRs. Level 2 Data, N-15, 16, 17 AMSU-B Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Open 2009-9 Rain Rate EDRs. Level 2 Data, METOP MHS Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Open 2009-10 Rain Rate EDRs. Level 2 Data, N-18 &19 MHS Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Open 2009-11 Polar-Cloud Drift Winds, Level 2 Data, Aqua & Terra MODIS Requestor: AFWA/2WXG Status: Open
