  1. JAG/ODAASpring 2011 COPC Co-Chairs: Mr. James Vermeulen, FNMOC Dr. Bradley Ballish, NCEP Presented by: Mr. James Vermeulen Exec. Secretary: Mr. Anthony Ramirez, OFCM

  2. Overview • JAG/ODAA Membership • Significant Accomplishments and On-going Activities • New Issues

  3. JAG/ODAA

  4. JAG/ODAA

  5. Accomplishments and Ongoing Activities • Satellite data requests • Transmit GOME-2 Ozone data products Requestor: FNMOC Provider: NESDIS Status: Closed • Transmit AVHRR FRAC 1k N15-19 GAC & HRPT data products Requestor: FNMOC Provider: NESDIS Status: Closed • Transmit SSMIS UPP CP data products Requestor: NESDIS Provider: FNMOC Status: Open • Transmit MODIS ¼ and ½ and 1k data products Requestor: FNMOC Provider: NESDIS Status: Open • Acquire Korean COMS-1 GOCI & MI data products Requestor: NAVO/AFWA/FNMOC Provider: NESDIS Status: Open • Acquire Sea Sfc Height Anomaly Jason1-2 & Envisat data products Requestor: NESDIS Provider: NAVO Status: Open

  6. Satellite Data Source Catalog (COPC AI) • Mr. Johansen, NESDIS, has completed the first draft of a catalog of satellite data sources from inputs received from NAVO, FNMOC, JCSDA, and internet WMO sites. • Source information is 10 fields per line. • JAG/ODAA members recommended a field be added to reflect if data sets are being acquired or are planned to be acquired by a member OPC. • The first draft of the catalog is under review by the JAG/ODAA satellite sub-group and recommendations will be addressed in a separate sub-group teleconference.

  7. Delivery of NAVO SST data to NCEP in BUFR • Current system used to deliver NAVO SST data to EMC will be discontinued • Arranging continuation of delivery of NAVO SST data to NCEP Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) • NCEP requests the data in BUFR format and have provided the BUFR tables and encoder to NAVO • NAVO is continuing this effort with NCEP/EMC

  8. Radiosonde Replacement System (RRS) • Hi-res BUFR product to be introduced in FY12 • Approximately 80 of 91 NWS sites have deployed the RRS • New V2.1 software installments will begin April 2011, 10-12 sites per week, projected to be completed Summer 2011. • Planning for communications, testing, user decoder capability • New product will follow WMO prescribed template in line with NWS/TOC led U.S. BUFR migration plan • JAG/ODAA subgroup working with NWS Observing Systems Branchon Conops, format, dissemination issues • Centers need to test processing the high numbers of levels (roughly 6,000), followed by optimized filtering and averaging

  9. WMO Information System (WIS) • Is a global framework for data telecommunications and a system for managing and moving weather, water and climate information • Integrated approach to collection and dissemination of observed data and products, as well as data discovery, access and retrieval services • Will be core information system utilized by WMO members built on the Global Telecommunication Systems of WMO’s World Weather Watch • NWS/TOC is projected to implement this new system in Jan 2012 • WIS is expected to be operational internationally in 2015. • NWS/TOC is currently testing the new Data Discovery, Access and Retrieval services (DAR) capability. A key new feature of WIS, DAR is a request/reply “pull” mechanism with data management functions; implemented through the internet.

  10. Obtain proxy NPOESS HD5 data created from level 1b MODIS and IASI data for testing • The data is available to OPCs for use on the GRAVITE/CasaNOSA server. • Currently being accessed by FNMOC, NRL, and NAVOCEANO • 72 hour NCT data set available with 19 unique orbits • Closed

  11. Acquisition of Korean COMS-1 Satellite data • Korean Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite-1 (COMS-1) Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and Meteorological Imager (MI) data • AFWA working necessary Mark IVB modifications to enable MI data receipt • Joint OPC request established through NESDIS • No agreement in place yet • NAVO also pursuing in a separate/parallel effort

  12. ESDA TR-1 For Official Use Only (FOUO) • ESDA TR-1 replaced the Shared Processing Program (SPP) Operations Manual (POM) in 2009  • POM was restricted to FOUO limited distribution by 2002 agreement • FOUO exempted from Freedom of Information Act due to environmental satellite data and space related operational information • TR-1 undergoing FOUO review/revalidation

  13. Aircraft Waypoints • The NWSTG waypoint dictionary was updated on 22 February 2011 using the FAA dictionary which was shown optimal for the NWSTG. • The NCEP waypoint dictionary update is being tested. • Since AFWA’s data base system does not currently allow multiple locations for one waypoint name, we will try to find just the actively used location for each waypoint with multiple locations for AFWA.

  14. New Issues AFWA Replacement of Weather Products Management and Distribution System (WPMDS) • AFWA will be replacing its main external facing communication system: WPMDS. Transition dates still TBD. • A candidate replacement system called Moving Weather and its related catalog called Discover Weather is being evaluated. • FNMOC is planning a similar system replacement and expressed interest in discussing this further with AFWA.

  15. Joint Operations Initiative: AFWA 14th Weather Squadron and National Climatic Data Center • 14th WS and NCDC are developing a CONOPS for Joint Operations. • Goal: a single core database managed by NCDC with 14 WS personnel sharing data ingest and QC responsibilities. • The AF will be able to take advantage of the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS) system and N-WAVE --NOAA's research network. • Savings in hardware, IT overhead and software licenses.

  16. Administrative Items Terms of Reference • Members have provided input, update being drafted
