  1. Standards & Labeling programme and Building Standards for Refrigeration and Air-conditioning 31st March 2011 Wijitha Perera

  2. Why Building Standards? • Ensure Quality • Ensure Safety • Ensure Energy Efficiency

  3. Quality in a Conditioned Space • Temperature • 25oC DB + 1.5oC • Humidity • 55 + 5% • Indoor Air Quality • Supply of Fresh Air • Removal of Contaminated Air / Dilution

  4. What Standards to Use • Code of Practice For Energy Efficient Buildings in Sri Lanka – 2008 • ASHRAE Standards • Eg. 1. ASHRAE Standard 62.1 of 2007 – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality 2. ASHRAE Standard 90.1 of 2007 – Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

  5. What Standards to Use • AHRI (ARI) Standards for Equipment • CIBSE

  6. Safety • Not to Use substances with Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) • Not to use substances with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) • Not to use materials where substances with ODP and high GWP has been used in the manufacturing process • Not to use materials which emit volatile substances such as solvents.

  7. Labeling Program • Labeling is essential to ensure that the equipment conforms to the set standards regarding safety and energy efficiency • Facilities for testing equipment is essential for a successful labeling program • At present such facilities for AC & Ref equipment is not available • SEA has embarked on a program to set up a labeling program for Refrigerators as an initial step
