DIRECTIONS

Explore the fascinating world of human perception and sensory systems through a series of interactive lab experiments conducted at home and school. Test for color blindness, measure hearing abilities, experience the Stroop effect, discover your blindspot, explore optical illusions, assess vestibular and kinesthetic senses, examine touch sensitivity, identify smells, and taste challenges. Record your results and gain a deeper understanding of how our senses shape our perceptions.

  5. Directions • Partner 1 will close their eyes. • Partner 2 will choose an X to stand on and call Partner 1’s name. • Have Partner 1 tell you how far they think you are away in feet. • Repeat steps 1-3, 3 times • Then have Partner 1 cover one ear and close their eyes. Repeat the experiment. • Record your results. • What was harder, one ear or two? Why?

  6. Lab 3 AT HOME Stroop Effect

  7. Directions • Click here for the Stroop Test. • Record your times on your lab report. • Click here to read why this happens. • Record why on your lab report.

  8. Lab 4 AT HOME Blindspot

  9. Directions • Click here for a blind spot test. • Record on your lab report why this happens. • Click here for a depth perception test. • Explain your results on your lab report.

  10. Lab 5 AT HOME Optical Illusions

  11. Directions • Read the following. The components of an object can distort the perception of the complete object. Our mind is the final arbiter of truth. Most optical illusions are the result of: 1) incongruent design elements at opposite ends of parallel lines, 2) influence of background patterns on the overall design, 3) adjustment of our perception at the boundaries of areas of high contrast, 4) afterimages resulting from eye movements or from kinetic displays, or 5) inability to interpret the spatial structure of an object from the context provided by the picture. 2. Click here for a set of illusions. 3. Fill out the chart on your lab report.

  12. Lab 6 AT HOME Vestibular and Kinesthetic

  13. Directions • Click here to practice your Kinesthetic sense. • Choose 3 activities to do with your partner. • Record which activities you chose and your results on your lab report.

  14. Lab 7 AT HOME Touch

  15. Directions • Partner 1 will close their eyes. • Partner 2 will use a ballpoint pen or washable marker to draw on Partner 1. • While Partner 1 is still blindfolded, have them use a different color pen/marker to draw on the exact place where they believe they were originally drawn on. • Measure the distance from the original to the guessed location. • Record your results on your lab report. • Complete 3 times. • Switch and repeat.

  16. Lab 8 AT SCHOOL Smell

  17. Directions • Smell the different cups of lemon water. • Which do you believe have the most lemon, which have the least? • Check the answers card to see how well you did. • Record your results.
