  8. Here’s how you present any task or behavior… • Define the task (for you 1st) • Define performance • Teach at the most basic (crawl) • Introduce additional conditions progressively and sequentially (walk) • Force/Reinforce the standard through exposure (run)

  9. Training Principles • Training needs to be progressive • Progress at the speed of the dog • Akin – FF 10x/day (2-4 weeks) • Not too fast or slow • Training needs to be sequential • Basics first then complex • Drill for skill – (crawl – walk – run) • Expose for Expertise (run)

  10. Nuggets / Akin-isms • The 40 yard blind is the downfall of lots of retrievers (ladder drills) • You can’t train a mule to run the Kentucky Derby • Leaving dirty dishes in the sink shouldn’t get the same correction as sleeping with your wife’s sister • We get there from different directions, but we all arrived • Lots of programs can work • Train your dog (read how your pup is progressing)

  11. What does this all mean? • It is how you present the information • Use the ‘crawl-walk-run’ methodology • You can't go from a-d without b & c
