  6. Marketing The process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers, for the purpose of selling the product or service. It is a critical business function for attracting customers and establishing a brand.

  7. Advertising A form of communication for marketing and branding. Used to encourage, persuade or manipulate an audience to continue to take some new action. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior with respect to a commercial offering.

  8. Public Relations (PR) The practice of managing the spread of information between an individual or organization and the public. Public relations may include an organization or individual gaining exposure to their audience using topic of public interest and news items that do not require direct payment.The aim of public relations is to persuade the public, investors, partners, employees and other stakeholders to maintain a certain point of view about it, its leadership, produces, political decisions or services.

Government Relations (Lobbying) The act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in government, most often legislators or regulatory agencies.UofL’s Government Relations focus on initiatives that promote and sustain the importance of research, higher education and the need to support them through funding and other means.

Effective Marketing, Adverting & PR Working with OCM How to leverage your internal assets • Have a plan, story, event, idea, concept or asset to sell • Know your assets, budget, people or what you can bring • Schedule a meeting with your account rep. • If you have a specific need, ask them to invite other members of OCM, an agency or firm. • Have your team, documentation, information and ducks in a row • Follow up with your rep or whomever they hand you off to • REMEMBER – you likely are not their only client, check in for updates and don’t be afraid to call.

Getting started Internet Communications If you have a message, event, promotion or idea that needs to reach faculty, staff or internal audiences then you need to contact our Internet Communications office.
