About Me • Lived in Sugar Grove and now Elburn for 20 years • 2 daughters- • Rachael • Kirstin • In my spare time I run, work-out, read, decorate, cook, play with my dog Piper • 2nd year teaching 2nd grade • in the education field for 6 years • Previously worked as a Registered Dietitian for 20 years

Fundations • Research validated spelling and phonics program based on rules of the English language • Used in K-2 • Carefully sequenced skills • Phonological awareness (structure of sounds) • Phonemic awareness (the smallest unit of sound that has meaning) • Decoding • Vocabulary • Fluency • Spelling • Writing

  7. Math • Differentiated instruction…your child may have a different teacher for math • Emphasis Tool: My Math • My Math has an online component you can use at home. (User name and password will be sent home) • Supplemented with other materials • Math facts • Very important! • Xtra Math (Computer fact practice for home and school) • Operations and algebraic thinking, numbers and operations in base ten, measurement and data, geometry

  11. Specials Schedule A- P.E. and Music B- Computer and Literacy C- P.E. and Music D- Art (Library 9:25-9:55) E- Literacy and P.E.

  12. Field Trip Brookfield Zoo in the spring Please sign up on the parent volunteer sheet if you are interested in joining us. We need 4 volunteers per class.

  13. Snacks/Water • We will not have snacks in the classroom. • Please make sure your child has a well balanced breakfast. • Only sport top water bottles are allowed and should be taken home each night to be properly cleaned and refilled. • Please label your child’s water bottle.

  14. Take Home Folder • This folder should come home EVERY day and be brought back to school EVERY day. • Please check it each night. • Two labeled pockets inside: • Keep at Home pocket - Your child will bring home completed work or other papers that do not need to be returned to school. • Return to School pocket – • Any notes you send should be placed on this side. • Likewise, if there are papers that require your signature and need to be returned, your child will place them in this pocket.

  15. Assignment Notebook • This is our way of communicating daily. • Homework and reminders will be recorded each day. • Please initial the parent signature section each day. • This is a great place to jot me a note if you have any questions or concerns.

Reading Minutes • In lieu of a separate reading calendar, we will use the assignment notebook for this purpose. • For the 20 minutes of required reading each night you or your child should write • the title of the book your child read • number of minutes • parent initials next to it • This can be any combination of: • silent reading • reading aloud to you or a sibling • read aloud

  17. Transportation • Send a note if you require any changes in transportation home. • If a child is going home with a friend we need notes from both parties. • If a note is not sent, contact the office by 3:00 (not me)  • Remember that if your child is having any transportation changes we will need a note. Also, if your child is going to a friend’s house we need a note from both parties.

  18. Behavior Plan • We will have an all class plan and an individual plan. Below you will see the clip chart 2nd grade will be using.

  19. Other Important things… • Be sure to sign up for a Parent-Teacher conference • The parent helper sheets are on the white board • 4 parents for field trip • 2 parents for each party • (1 game and 1 craft) • Halloween and Winter parties • Help during the school day  • Communication • New improved web page • Konnect • Online • Phone app • Facebook • Twitter

  20. Important things… Please bring in an unframed family picture to put in the room. Return student information sheet tonight or send with your child. Tea For Two will be on Friday, May 9 at 2:00. Mark your calendars!
