  4. Absolute dating is a method of estimating the age of an object in years. It is sometimes called “numerical” dating. What is absolute dating?

  5. Relative dating is a method of sequencing events in the order they happened. What is relative dating?

  6. When you use relative dating, you use clues to find the sequence, or order, that the events occurred in. • You determine the age of an object relative to other objects or events in a sequence. Which newspaper is probably older?

  7. Example: Layers of Rock • The oldest rocks are in the lowest layer. • The upper layers are younger. • Rocks that cut through the layers are the younger than the layers they cut through.
