Sooke is identified as a "Very Dry" interface fire location, highlighting the urgent need for effective wildfire protection. Community engagement through recreational off-road activities plays a crucial role. Off-roaders can be valuable assets in fire prevention and response due to their local knowledge, terrain navigation skills, and ability to maintain open trails, which help create fuel breaks. Our proposal seeks support for a comprehensive wildfire protection plan involving trail mapping, access control, and volunteer training, ensuring community resilience against wildfires.

What does off road recreation have to do with it? As a result of their recreational activities off roaders: • Are a recruitable population for fire fighting • Have vehicles capable of navigating the terrain • Have the skill to operate them • Have knowledge of the terrain and trails • Keep the trails open and passable • Can quickly make an emergency extraction • Open trails create a fuel break • Ground crews are essential to air suppression • Volunteers are needed for emergency social services
How will we control access? • GPS data logger • Electronic padlock access control • Estimated cost ~ $150 p/pair • ~ $300 p/lock • GIS trail mapping integration possible • System admin could potentially create an employment position • at SeaParc • Wildfire preparation has $5000 budget • Community Grant funding
CRD Research project proposal • Trail mapping • Destination mapping • Historical use patterns • Environmental impact • Access control • Boundary control • Economic benefits • Social benefits • Wildfire preparation planning • Operational costing • Protective Services Integration
