Overview • Content: The history of Blackbeard, Mary Reed, and Captain Kidd, how they were impactful to history, and a few fun facts about them! • Setting: In a computer lab for computer access, with an instructor to help facilitate the activity, among their fellow classmates • Audience: A freshman World History Class with some knowledge of pirates in history and that are equipped with basic computer skills

Objectives • Students need to be able to answer questions over pirates, obtain a 90% on their final quiz, which covers the historical impact of three specific pirates they have learned about • Students need to improve their understanding over certain pirates and are better capable of relating piracy to their life and are able to discuss what they have learned

  8. About Blackbeard • Life-1680-1718 • Real Name- Edward Teach • Born in Bristol, England

  9. About Blackbeard • Blackbeard began by joining Benjamin Hornigold and ran the Caribbean Island region. • He then got ownership of a ship called Queen Anne’s Revenge. • He formed an alliance with pirates from port Charleston, South Carolina, and ransomed inhabitants and ran sandbars near Beaufort, South Carolina.

  10. About Blackbeard • He then received royal pardon the first time he was captured. • Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia arranged for his death. • Blackbeard was known for having 14 wives and being able to read and write.

  11. Famous For • Blackbeard lit tied fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies • He was known for being the most successful pirate in history • Was the most feared pirate in history • Opposing crew often surrendered upon sight of his ship • He was the most successful pirate in the Caribbean

  12. Impact • Blackbeard’s name now creates images of theft, greed, piracy, and forcing prisoners to walk the plank. He has gone down in history as the most notorious pirate although he was never recorded to have killed a person on his raids.

  14. About Mary Reed • Life- ?-1721 • Name-Mary Reed • Born-England

  15. About Mary Reed • Mary Reed was forced by her mother to look like her older brother after he passed away to continue the financial support of his paternal grandmother. • Mary would work as a fat boy and received employment on ships. • She then joined the British military which allied with Dutch and Austria.

About Mary Reed • She met and fell in love with a Flemish soldier who she then married. • She dressed as a woman for the first time and switched back after he passed away. • She quit the military in Holland and boarded a ship bound for the West Indies. • Her ship was then taken by pirates who forced her to join them.

  17. Famous For • Mary Reed was one of the only two female pirates to ever be convicted of piracy in the 18th century • She was known for dressing as a man

  18. Impact • Mary Reed was known for being one of two female pirates in the Golden Era of Piracy. She was also known for her skills in battle as a member of the military and a pirate.

  19. Captain Kidd

  20. About Captain Kidd • Life-1654-1701 • Name-William “Captain” Kidd • Born-Dundee, Scotland

  21. About Captain Kidd • Captain Kidd was more known for his trial and execution than his actual life as a pirate. • Kidd began life a merchant and a privateer in America. • He was considered a pirate after serving privateer in the Caribbean and he stole a ship and was elected Captain.

  22. About Captain Kidd • His crew deserted him. • He later killed William Moore on a mission to complete a deal with the Governor of New York and Massachusetts.

  23. Famous For • Captain Kidd was led to believe that a pardon for murdering William More was in order. After arriving in London, Kidd was arrested and found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy). After being found guilty, Kidd was hung, and on the first try the rope broke. Kidd died on the second attempt.

  24. Impact • Captain Kidd’s body was left hanging for many years and he served as a warning for all who wanted to attempt piracy
