Understanding Geometric Sequences: Key Concepts and Problem Solving

In this lesson, students will explore the fundamentals of geometric sequences, focusing on how to recognize and identify them through a common ratio. They will learn to distinguish between arithmetic and geometric sequences, find the next three terms of a given geometric sequence, and apply the formula to discover any term in the sequence. Additionally, students will interpret real-world problems that can be modeled with geometric sequences, bridging their knowledge towards exponential functions. Test preparation materials will include exercises from page 465, #51-54.

  1. Objective 8-6: Geometric Sequences • TASK: • Students will recall arithmetic sequences. • Students will see if a sequence has a common ratio that you multiply each term by to get to the next term which makes it a geometric sequence. • Students will identify the next three terms in a geometric sequence. • Students will distinguish between arithmetic and geometric sequences. • Students will use the formula for a geometric sequence to find any term of the sequence. • Students will interpret a word problem and derive a function rule using the formula for a geometric sequence. • WHY: • Understanding geometric sequence is essential to bridging knowledge to apply to exponential functions.
