For Thought What is Leadership?
Leadership Experience • Open your Knob Journals to paragraph 1-2 on page 4. Read what it says about a “frame of reference.” You are going to learn much about leadership at The Citadel, but you all have some leadership frame of reference already. • Think about the experience you already have had with leaders and leadership. • What do leaders do? • What are characteristics of good leadership practices? • How about bad leadership practices? • Who has been a past good leader in your life and why?
Leadership Experience Record your thoughts about your leadership frame of reference on page 5 of Your Knob Journal. Don’t worry about your definition of leadership. We’ll come back to that later. Be ready to discuss your observations with the class.

Leadership Definitions There are many different definitions of leadership.

Different Definitions of Leadership Leadership is influencing people – by providing purpose, direction and motivation – while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. Leadership is the process of followers and the leader engaging in reciprocal influence to achieve a shared purpose. Leadership is all about getting people to work together to make things happen that might not otherwise occur or prevent things from happening that ordinarily would take place. Qualities of a Leader • From your experience you can probably pick out who is a “good leader” • Coach, teacher, mentor, pastor, civic leader • What is it about that individual – their personal qualities that make them stand out? • What did you learn from their example of leadership?
Group Work • Refer to what you recorded in your Journal about the characteristics of a good leader and good leadership practices. Work as a small group to develop 3 to 5 key qualities you will want to see from your leaders • Be ready to share these with the rest of the class

The Citadel’s Leadership Development Model • Each year represents a different stage of development • The freshman year is about preparing to lead. Starting today, you will begin developing your own leadership style by observing others. • You will spend this year learning to be accountable to yourself. This is the foundation for leadership. • Before a person can truly lead, they must learn how to follow. 1st Year Prepare 2nd Year Engage 3rd Year Serve 4th Year Lead
