  2. “in media res” • Write the definition for “in media res” - Latin for “in the midst of affairs” – the narrative starts in the middle or end of the story, rather than the beginning.

  3. Literary analysis: epic hero The epic hero is defined or revealed by his deeds. As we read, look for qualities appropriate for an epic hero. Big question: What do Odysseus’ deeds reveal about his character?

  4. Conflict (lines 1-5) What type of conflict is introduced in Odysseus’ initial statements at the banquet?

  5. Literary analysis (lines 7-28) • How does Odysseus portray himself in his speech? • Are his comments about himself appropriate for an epic hero?

  6. CFU (lines 41-47) Write: • What happened to those who ate the lotus flower? • Why doesn’t Odysseus want his men to eat the flower? • Where is his home?

  7. Character analysis (lines 130-131) Pair-share: • Why does Odysseus refuse his men’s “sound” request? • What does this tell us about Odysseus?

  8. Literary device (line 132) • What literary device is found here? • What do you think it means?

  9. Theme • An important theme in Homer’s epics is that of immortal fame. See lines 167-169). • What would our culture feel about such self-advertisement?

  11. CFU (lines 203-210) • Why doesn’t Odysseus kill the Cyclops at this time?

  12. Inferring (lines 255-261) • Why does Odysseus offer the Cyclops the liquor he brought from the ship?

  14. Epic hero (lines 282-285) • Pair share: How do these lines illustrate the heroic qualities of Odysseus?

  15. Predicting • What will happen to the men and Odysseus when the Cyclops is blinded? • How will they escape from the cave.

  16. Odysseus’ clever plan • Did his lie about his name pay off? 

  17. Literary analysis: epic hero • One characteristic of an epic hero is that they can do many things well. Odysseus makes his own raft as skillfully as a shipwright and successfully lashes together teams of sheep and slings his men under each team. These would be difficult to accomplish under the best of conditions!

  18. Inferring (lines 390-399) Pair-share: What mistake has Odysseus made? Do you think he will learn from it?

  19. Character analysis (lines 415-419) • Why does Odysseus reveal so much about himself?

  20. Predict (line 453) Write: • What does the statement “and the god heard him” suggest about the fate of Odysseus and his men?
