  4. ZEN BUDDHISM • Most influential branch of Buddhism in Japan • Believe in sudden enlightenment rather than through years of study • Believers must try to understand koans • This will lead to enlightenment

  5. FEUDAL JAPAN • Lords hired warriors to fight other lords • Japan became divided into large estates • Much disorder and violence

  6. vocabulary • Samurai • A Japanese warrior who pledged to serve a particular lord and protect his estate • Became a distinct social class • Shogun • In feudal Japan, the emperor’s chief general, who held most of the country’s power.

  7. TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE • Tokugawa Ieyasu was shogun • Europeans arrived in Japan • Brought firearms and goods • Converted many to Catholicism

  8. THE CLOSING DOOR • Tokugawa ordered all Christians to leave Japan • Would not let Japanese people return after leaving • Banned European trade • EFFECT = ISOLATED
