Environment • -17% fossil fuel= feed our self compare it to 18% personal transportation • -Food is very important part of energy problem and climate crises • -4 tons of Carbon every year -because of high meet and highly processed food consumption. • -More and more food in the supermarket is traveling further and further -1500 miles

  3. Pollution • Pesticides • 80 million acres of corn field in the country - ASTROZINE • Which is a very toxic chemical • Fertilizers • - Nitrogen • -Travel and at Golf of Mexico created a dead zone which is the size of NJ

  4. Health • Not keeping the population healthy • -Epidemic of obesity and for the first time in American history children have shorter life span their parents. (diabetes , other chronic diseases) • -So many calories from same kind of plants- processed corn or soy • - Soda>milk - micro nutrientdeficiency

  5. Money • It turn out that it is more expensive-25 billon a year to subsidize this food industry.

  6. Food security • -Concentrated food system-raise vulnerability contamination • E-coli • -One thing goes wrong many people are going to be sick

  7. Depends on Ignorance • -If people know how the food was made they will lose appetite • -More people are gaining awareness- Whole food and farmers market( double last year) - Both are growing very fast.

  8. Alternative • Organic food • 1% when the book was wrote , now at 3% growing fast • Organic food industry is repeating the industrial food chain • 1) Becomingmonoculture • - Chickens- feed organic food , no chemicals used however they do not let the chickens out for the first 5 weeks and they live for 7 weeks. • 2) Organic food started traveling to. DC-California - DC • Walmart is organic- strawberry from china , blueberry form Canada….etc • - Do we want to do this? Better to take care of land closer

  9. More sustainable • -Polyculture -6 species-pork, turkey • key rabbit etc. In symbiosis system- Each species contribute to the ecosystem. Based on the natural relationship of animals. • Biodiversity • Sell locally • Favor local foodeconomy • The Market for Vegetarian Foods • -More and more people are aware of how standard American fare not only hurts our health but also harms the environment and supports cruelty to animals. • -It's easier to eat vegetarian or vegan now than ever.

  10. http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/market.htm#market • The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) • From the table vegetarian number is increasing at a very fast rate • Survey results ... indicate that vegetarians feel even more strongly than non-vegetarian groups that food is an important part of their lives. • 66% • 33% • Cultivate Research identified that 7 percent of respondents were willing to give up meat (all forms) entirely. The Vegetarian Times survey revealed that, of the non-vegetarians surveyed, 5.2 percent were "definitely interested" in following a vegetarian-based diet in the future. These results suggest another potential 11.5 to 15.5 million meat-free consumers. • VRG found that 0.8 percent of adults, or approximately 1.8 million people, are vegan • -people who also avoid dairy, egg, honey, and other animal ingredients. (This number is a subset of the 7.5 million estimated vegetarians.)

  11. Another 1.3 percent, or 2.9 million people, are vegans - they consume honey. • Who eats plant-based foods • Women ages 18-34 were more likely to be vegetarian than any other gender-age group, • Lower-income households, younger people, and individuals of color are more likely to use meat alternatives • Cultivate Research and Vegetarian Times both found a more even split for health and animal concerns among vegetarians • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFpjskn3_Pc&
