  2. AP Language and Composition Exam Consists of: 1 hour to answer the M/C Questions 15 min. for reading 2 hours to write three essays

AP GRADE QUALIFICATION • 5 Extremely well qualified • 4 Well qualified • 3 Qualified • 2 Possibly qualified • 1 No recommendation • AP Exam grades of 5 are equivalent to A grades in the corresponding college • course. AP Exam grades of 4 are equivalent to grades of A, B+, and B in college. • AP Exam grades of 3 are equivalent to grades of B-, C+, and C in college. (According to College Board Guidelines)

  4. Multiple choice section • This section counts as 45 percent of the AP Exam. • Wrong answers do not count against you! • But do NOT leave any questions un-answered. • Make an EDUCATED GUESS if questions are too difficult! • The questions will: • Ask a straitfoward questions. • Refer to specific line(s) and asks you to draw conclusion or interpret. • The ALL ....EXCEPT question. • Ask you to make an inference or to abstract a concept not directly stated in the passage. • Ask you to choose from different suggestions (Roman numeral question).

  5. ANALYSIS essay Analysis: is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. (Wikipedia) What are you trying to establish in an analysis essay? • Explain author’s purpose. • Explain Author’s purpose in using rhetorical devices to convey meaning. • Explain meaning.

In a wellwritten essay, analyze how Rodriguez uses contrasts between Mexico and California to explore and convey his conflicting feelings. • ...write an essay in which you analyze the methods that Green uses to persuade his fellow African Americans to join the Union forces. • ...write an essay analyzing the rhetorical strategies each writer uses to achieve his purpose and explaining which letter offers the more persuasive case.

How to do an analysis essay • Like any type of essay, you must follow this outline. • Introduction: Must contain your THESIS STATEMENT. • Body Paragraphs: Always include your TOPIC SENTENCE in each paragraph. (Let the reader know what you’re going to be talking about) • Conclusion: Don’t forget to include your voice, your opinion!

Thesis statements for analysis Use this template for guidance: • In ,_________________________________ uses (title of work) (author’s name) ____________________________________________ __________________________to (diction, imagery, detail, figurative language, etc.—the concrete)   ___________________________________________________________________________ (Marker Verb—reveal, explore, portray, convey, suggest, demonstrate, illustrate etc.) ________________________________________________________________________ (the abstract—tone, theme, purpose—the writer’s opinion about the subject that must be proven) ***Reminder: A thesis statement is the central focus of your entire essay. Think of it as the backbone of your essay or as the foundation. Your thesis statement will always contain a subject and an opinion. Sample Thesis: • A gifted rhetorician, the President used three primary literary tools to make his point: parallel structure to illustrate similarities between Northerner and Southerner, allusions to the Bible to highlight the Christian values so important to both, and personification to paint the war as an evil enemy, and the nation as a wounded friend.
