  3. 1: The Ottoman Empire • Problems experienced • Corruption, political decay • Pashas increased power • Nationalist revolts • Attempts made by leaders to reform government in each region • Westernization (government, military, economic reform) • Young Turks overthrew Sultan • Armenian massacre • Actions European Powers took • France invaded Egypt (then an Ottoman province) in 1798 (Napoleon) • Tried to control Ottoman territory (Russia), Britain intervened (Crimean War) • German’s built railroad ($$$)

  4. 2: Egypt • Attempts made by leaders to reform government in each region • Muhammad Ali develops a modern Egypt through Westernization • Problems experienced • Egypt falls under foreign control • Nationalists revolt against government • Government goes into debt over Suez Canal • Actions European Powers took • Britain makes Egypt a protectorate • Britain takes control of the Suez Canal
