This presentation provides an overview of a cooperative project between USGS and CZM focused on geologic sea-floor mapping in South Essex, Massachusetts. Covering an area of 123 km², the project utilizes various data types including interferometric sonar bathymetry, sidescan sonar backscatter, and seismic reflection profiles. The goals include characterizing the surface and subsurface of the sea floor. Current project status, data model methods, and future research directions are discussed. The survey spans 970 km of lines with a depth range of 0-55 meters.

USGS MDM Status/Lessons Learned • Just do it • Data management of ground validation points • Useful for topological update (feature class) • Annotation classes • Simplify USGS Open File Report process.
Future Research • How can the relationship class help us with spatial relationships? • How do we extract the high-res data from rasters? • Interpolation of seismic profile data in Geostatistical Analyst • How do we manage geologic interpretations in MDM? • Talk to the Geology Data Model Crew • Publish USGS Open File Report Spring 2005
