  6. SECOND PUNIC WAR • CCarthage had extended its empire into southern Spain. This caused unrest in Rome…why?! • TTo ease Roman tension, the Roman government helped Spanish rebels fight back against the Carthaginians. • TTo get back at Rome, Carthage sent their most famous, best general to attack Rome…

  7. HANNIBAL! Took an army of: • around 50,000 men. • 6,000 horsemen. • 37 elephants. …and crossed the Alps to reach Rome! Hannibal suffered large losses while crossing the mountains during winter to reach Rome! Almost half of the soldiers died and most of the elephants.

  10. SECOND PUNIC WAR • SScipio Africanus, a Roman general, leads a large Roman legion into Carthage. • HHannibal knows he must return home… • WWhat would you do if you was Hannibal?

  11. BATTLE OF ZAMA • SScipio wins! Carthage must give up Spain, their navy, and give Rome a lot of gold. • RRome gets more land and Carthage is no longer a threat.

  12. THIRD PUNIC WAR • WWhat do you do with someone that you have been fighting for almost 100 years already? • TThey are already weak because you have beaten them twice before. • YYou are a Roman consul…what do you try to persuade to the Senate? Attack and conquer, or work with Carthage.

  13. ROME CONQUERS! • RRome leads an army into Carthage and: • T- Takes 50,000 men, women, and children as slaves. • B- Burns Carthage to the ground. • P- Pours salt all over their fields. • Fand finally… Rome becomes the largest empire in the world at that time.
