  • Family immigrated from Ireland
  • Was born in Waxhaw, North Carolina
  • Went to tutors in his town, but never attended school
  • Was an orphan by the time he was 14
  • Fought in the American Revolution

  • Persuaded a lawyer named Spruce McCay to let him study law in McCay’s office.
  • After a few months of studying law Jackson became a lawyer, but was unsuccessful because he had a hard time finding clients.
