Traditional Music When talking about African music, the word "traditional music" refers to the qualities of African music previous to European colonisation of the continent, which was most prevalent in the late nineteenth century. This pre-colonial era was characterised by social upheaval and dynamism. Great African empires and kingdoms emerged and fell, leaving many of their customs and cultures in place in African villages today.
