1. Warm Up: Analogies • A comparison between things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification • Using the punctuation mark : means “is to”

2. For example… apple: tree grape: vine This is said: “Appleis to tree as grapeis to vine” Because the relationship is the same…apples grow on trees and grapes grow on vines.

3. Another example… • storm cloud: rain Create a sentence that connects this same relationship and think of another pair of words that share that same relationship. Ex. Storm cloud: Rain Bees: Honey Storm cloud is to rain as bees are to honey. Storm clouds make rain, bees make honey.

5. Simile Is a comparison between two unlike things using like or as His feet were as big as boats.

6. Willow and Ginkgo By Eve Merriam The willow is like an etching, Fine-lined against the sky. The ginkgo is like a crude sketch, Hardly worthy to be signed. The willow’s music is like a soprano, Delicate and thin. The ginkgo’s tune is like a chorus With everyone joining in. The willow is sleek as a velvet-nosed calf; The ginkgo is leathery as an old bull. The willow’s branches are like silken thread; The ginkgo’s like stubby rough wool.

7. Metaphor A metaphorstates a comparison between two unlike things, but it does NOT use the words like or as to make the comparison. Her hair is silk. He had the heart of a lion

8. Simile or Metaphor???? The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at all the cans on the grocery store shelves. As the teacher entered the room she muttered under her breath, "This class is like a three-ring circus!" The giant’s steps were thunder as he ran toward Jack. The pillow was a cloud when I put my head upon it after a long day.

9. Simile or Metaphor???? I feel like a limp dishrag. Those girls are like two peas in a pod. The fluorescent light was the sun during our test. No one invites Harold to parties because he’s a wet blanket. The bar of soap was a slippery eel during the dog’s bath. Ted was as nervous as a cat with a long tail in a room full of rocking chairs.

10. Simile/Metaphor/Analogy Game You have 8 minutes to come up with as many similes, metaphors ,and analogies as you can for the two words Miss Scott gives you… You can use both words, but not in the same simile, metaphor or analogy. They have to be used on their own!

12. Scoring of Simile/Metaphor/Analogy Game • You will get 1 point for each simile, 2 points for each metaphor, and 3 points for each analogy • When you’re finished, keep your paper on your desk and stay quiet until everyone’s finished.
