  1. Cells

  2. Cells • The smallest unit that can carry on life processes • Robert Hooke discovered cells in 1665 • Observed dead cork cells and thought they looked like tiny rooms

  3. Cells • Antone Van Leeuwenhoek invented a microscope in 1673 • First person to observe living cells

  4. Schleiden Theorized that all plants are composed of cells Helped to put together the cell theory

  5. Schwann Theorized that all animals were composed of cells Also helped put together the cell theory.

  6. Cell Theory • The idea of how cells are the basic unit of life in every living thing • Three parts…. • 1) Living things must contain at least 1 cell • 2) Cells are the basic unit of structure and function • 3) Cells are the only thing that can make other cells

  7. Cell Diversity • There are at least 200 kinds of cells in your body • Stomach, muscle, heart, liver, pancreas, bone, skin, blood, etc. • Size • Can vary greatly • Giraffe nerve cells are 2 m long • Common animal cells are between 10 and 50 μm in size • Shape • The shape of the cell depends on its function

  8. Organization • Cells have internal structures called organelles • The outer shell is called the membrane • The large center organelle is called the nucleus • Eukaryotes • Have a nucleus • Prokaryotes • Do not have a nucleus
