  3. Homework • 1. Summary log of Gattaca, due at the beginning of Class on Thursday • 2. Read pages 392 – 394 Read and take notes including the following: • Karyotype X & Y Chromosomes • Co-dominant Multiple Alleles • Genome Autosomes • Sex Chromosomes • Research paper Due Next Monday in class. See hand out

On Tuesday • Since there is no homework, we will complete the Movie Journal the first few minutes of class • See handout • As a class we will begin to watch the movie Gattaca, it is futuristic movie that deals with the topics of Eugenics and caste system (class). • As the movie goes on you are expected to take short notes then the following day turn in a movie journal detail the previous day’s viewing. • At the end of each class (last 10 minutes) you will be grouped to discuss what happened and why is it important. This is a chance for International students to ask questions of domestic students so that everyone has the same understanding.

  6. Gattaca • Characters: • Vincent – older brother – not perfect. Impersonates someone to be space traveler. • Anton – younger brother, considered perfect also a cop • Irene – Friend / co-worker of Vincent • Director – Runs the Space Agency Gattaca • Jerome (Eugene) Morrow – Perfect person, but now in wheelchair. Allows Vincent to take on his identy • Dr. Lamar – doing the DNA testing • Detective Hugo – Cop tracking down the murder

  7. Gene regulation • What is an operon? • These are involved in regulation. They are cells with similar or connected functions. • For example for a bacterium to utilize a sugar such as lactose (milk sugar) it would need operon to produce the proteins to allow it to be use absorb the lactose nutrients. The lac operon allows this to happen

  8. Promoters & Operators • On one side of the regulatory region are Promoters which is where RNA –polymerase binds to begin transcription. • The other region is known as the Operator. This is where the binding of the lac operon proteins bind to the DNA. • This is where the proteins can either block reproduction or allow it to proceed depending on the need of the organism.

  9. Eukaryotic gene regulation • Transcription definition: • Transcription is the process by which the information in a strand of DNA is copied into a new molecule of messenger RNA (mRNA). DNA safely and stably stores genetic material in the nuclei of cells as a reference, or template.  • When binding DNA sequences, regions of the cell will regulate the eukaryotic genes

Eukaryotic gene regulation • Transcription factors control the expression of those genes. • Some factors promote or block expression through RNA polymerase. • RNA polymerase - an enzyme that creates or starts the formation of RNA from a DNA template during transcription. This is how cells reproduce.

  11. Eukaryotic gene regulation • Promoters can activate binding sites for transcription. Some factors can have major influences on what sites get activated (eventually expressed). • Some factors need a chemical agent to become activated, like steroids.
