  2. DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS • Need quarters of coverage • Medicare after 30 months • Benefits to family members

  3. SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME • No earnings record • Assets below $2,000 • Medicaid • No family benefits

  4. Durational Requirement vs. Time of Application • A disability must “last or be expected to last for at least twelve consecutive months.” This is called the “duration” rule. • Apply when expected duration will be met. Do not need to wait 12 months.

  5. Waiting Period Payments are not made for the first 5 months after the month Social Security decides the disability began, known as ONSET DATE.

  6. Returning to Work • The Social Security Administration encourages people to go back to work. • Programs allow for continued Medicare and Medicaid coverage. • Private disability insurance coverage and continuation of health insurance coverage may be affected. • Trial Work Period- up to 9 months then 36 month Extended Period of Eligibility. • Earnings under690 (in 2009) will NOT trigger a trial work period month • After 9 cumulative months over trial work period threshold, earnings under $980 (in 2009) will allow continued monthly benefits
