  2. Why do people use drugs? Curiosity, Peer Pressure, Money, Escape, Fit in, Low Self-Esteem, Stress…. Drug Trafficker: Carrying or Selling drugs for someone. (young and old) Euphoria: feeling of pleasure or the “High” Physical and Psychological Addiction Experiment: Cocaine vs Food

Marijuana Most abused illegal drug in the U.S. (next to alcohol) Hemp plant, harvest and dry the plant Roll into a cigarette called a joint or can be smoked in a pipe THC gives the euphoria THC lingers in the fat for 1 month, but can be detected for up to 6 months 1 joint = 5 cigarettes (lung damage)

  4. Amphetamines Stimulants; get up and go drug Increase activity, block fatigue & hunger Intense but short lived euphoria Usually taken by injection Withdrawl symptoms very dangerous

  5. Cocaine Stimulant: comes from the leaves of a coca bush Mixed with white powder Sniffed, smoked, injected Short euphoria, out of control

  6. Sedatives Depressants. Slow down nervous system, heart rate, breathing Lower blood pressure and body temperature Tranquilizer

  7. Opiates Comes from the seed pods of the “opium poppy” It is a narcotic drug: relieves pain, causes sleepiness Codeine Morphine Heroin (weak) (strongest) (abused)

  8. Hallucinogens Produce vivid sounds, smells, visions LSD: best known, 1 drop = mental trip for hours PCP: Frightening and violent tendencies

  9. Inhalents Solvents: liquid that vaporizes gas, glue, paint thinner, cleaners Propellants: substance in cans to spray hairspray, deodorant, paint - Huffing Medical: use by doctors/dentist laughing gas – chloroform Dusting

  10. Kick the Habit Biggest step – Admitting it! Face the problem and get help Revolving Door
