  1. I can analyze quotes Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

  2. Quote Analysis • Be able to explain why a quote is important to the text. • Be able to infer what the quote reveals about the character or plot. • Be able to make connections to a specific quote. • Not a bad idea to read the surrounding text.

  3. Quote Analysis • Why is this quote important? • What does it reveal about a character? • What does it reveal about the plot? • How does it show a specific theme? • Does the quote connect to anything that was previously read? • Can the quote be applied to society? EXPLAIN. • Do you agree with the quote? EXPLAIN.

  4. Quote Analysis Example 1 • “YEH’RE NOT TO GO WANDERIN’ AROUND AFTER DARK, HARRY! AN’ YOU TWO LETTIN’ HIM!” – Hagrid (122)

  5. Quote Analysis Example 1 • This quote is important because it shows that the entire staff worries that Harry is in danger. Hagrid is now one of many that have been uptight about Harry wandering around. This also shows that Ron and Hermione should also be more worried than they are. This quote reveals that Sirius Black is indeed a threat to Harry. Everyone, even Hagrid, is concerned that Harry remains in Hogwarts and not sneaking around.

  6. Quote Analysis 2 • “You’ll forgive me for saying so, my dear, but I perceive very little aura around you. Very little receptivity to the resonances of the future.” – Professor Trelawney (107)

  7. Quote Analysis 2 • This quote is important because it reveals a weakness in Hermione. For the first time, it is hinted that Hermione will not do well in a class. For the first time, Hermione has not been respectful towards a teacher. I am not sure I agree with the teacher. There is no evidence to support the claim. I just think she is mad that Hermione is challenging her. This is interesting because it is only the first day at class. It will be interesting to see what develops between Trelawney and Hermione as the year goes on.

  8. Quote Analysis 3 • Separate sheet of paper…you are turning this one in! • “Black is deranged, Molly, and he wants Harry dead.” Mr. Weasley (66)
