  1. 9-19-16Aim: How can you compose the best possible DBQ-essay about autocratic rulers?Topic: Absolutism/DBQ Do Now: List three facts about each AUTOCRAT that ARE NOT found in the documents (outside information/prior knowledge).

  2. Who is speaking? How Do I Analyze the Documents? 2. What is the date? 3. What is the explicit (clearly defined) meaning? 4. What is the implicit (implied) meaning? 5. Is it a primary or secondary source of information? Application: Review last night’s homework.

  3. Guide to Analyzing Quotes for Document Based Essays and Research Papers. • Read through the document, quote or material provided. • Look to see if the evidence relates to the topic of the paragraph. • Explain how and why the quotation or information/evidence is important. • Do not assume that your paraphrase of a quote automatically proves your point. Make the effort to clarify the significance of your quote to the thesis/topic of the paragraph. • Connect the quote to the Topic (topic sentence) of the paragraph and the Thesis. (ask yourself-Why is this quote or information relevant enough for me to use here?) • The final sentence of the paragraph summarizes what we have learned relevant to the thesis and pushes us forward to the next paragraph. • Note: In utilizing quotes to prove a point in your essay, you do not have to use the entire quote. as it may not all be relevant to your topic or thesis. You can just use the relevant portion or phrase.

  4. Signal Phrases-to be used in a thesis statement or when introducing a document. reveals, highlights, illuminates, illustrates, acknowledges, adds, admits, agrees, argues, believes, claims, compares, confirms, contends, emphasizes, comments, exposes, illustrates, grants, insists, observes, reasons, refutes, rejects, reports, responds, suggests, thinks, writes, endorses, declares, denies, disputes, enlightens, conveys, explains Use a signal phrase from the list above, to edit one statement from the sample DBQ paragraphs.

  5. Keep in mind the following pieces of advice: 1. A paragraph is AT LEAST five sentences. In a paragraph you should: state your point, explain your point using the document, “explain relevance” using OUTSIDE INFORMATION, and COME BACK TO YOUR POINT. 2. Introduce your source and cite your source correctly: According to Constantine de Grunwald, Peter the Great placed “immense effort into creating a good artillery” thus improving Russia’s military and helping to bring his country into the modern world (Doc. 4).

  6. The DBQ Essay Historical Context: Throughout history, autocratic leaders have exercised authority over their countries and the lives of their people. The actions of autocratic leaders have both helped and hurt their countries and their peoples. Examples of such leaders include Emperor Shi Huangdi, Czar Peter the Great, and King Louis XIV. Task: Using the information from the documents and your knowledge of global history, answer the questions that follow each document in Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you write the Part B essay in which you will be asked to Select two leaders mentioned in the historical context and for each • Describe actions taken by the leader that show this individual was an autocrat • Discuss the extent to which this leader’s use of autocratic power helped and/or hurt his country or his people

  7. For this particular essay: 1. You must choose TWO autocrats. There are TWO tasks. 2. 2 (tasks) + 2 (autocrats)= 4 body paragraphs 3. Therefore there will be six paragraphs: introduction, body #1, body #2, body #3, body #4, conclusion Summary: Any questions on what is expected of you in this essay?
