Homework • Create Unconformity Foldable: Include Drawing and Real-life picture of each; Description of the types of rocks and their locations; 2 additional facts (Sept 7) • Create a study cards for last week notesPrepare for Quiz on this Friday (September 7) • Complete Essential Question by Sept 10

Guided Questions • What are the geological unit of time from smallest to largest? • What is one major event that occurred during the Precambian Era? • What is one major event that occurred during the Paleozoic Era? • What is one major event that occurred during the Mesozoic Era? • What is one major event that occurred during the Cenozoic Era?

  5. What is the geologic time scale? • Time-line of Earth’s history • Breaks down Earth’s history into units of time

  6. Eras are the largest unit of time. Ex: Precambrian Paleozoic Mesozoic Cenozoic Eras are divided into smaller parts called periods. Periods are then divided into even smaller parts called epochs.

  7. Era Period Epoch

  8. Precambrian • Earliest span of time in Earth’s history. • No life for a long time and then very simple life appears. • Early life influenced by volcanoes and mountain building

  9. Paleozoic Era • Took place after Precambrian. • Early invertebrates and amphibians, • “Age of Fishes”. • Tropical climates allowed growth of new species • Mass extinction at end most marine invertebrates disappeared.

  10. Mesozoic Era • Took place after Paleozoic Era. • Reptiles, small mammals, and small birds. • “Age of Reptiles” -dinosaurs, etc • Late mass extinction by asteroid or climate change that caused dinosaurs to go extinct.

  11. Cenozoic Era • The Era we are currently in!!! • Mammals, flowering plants, humans. • “Age of Mammals” • We still have much diversity but could there be a mass extinction to come???

  12. Rebuild the Cliff • Which is the oldest layer of rock? How can you tell? • What is the oldest fossil? Hoe do you know? • What great event probably occurred in the area? How can you tell? • Arrange the fossils in order of their appearance in the rock record?
