Helpful tips for reading to young children • Toddlers as well as kindergarten children can benefit from this book. • This book is intended to help prepare children for reading. • Also to help build literary skills and confidence in beginner readers. • Show the cover and ask the child what they think this book is about. • Have the child (help) turn the pages. • Ask the child to listen for words that sound the same, rhyme. • Point to the words as you read to the child. • Did the child notice the sun and moon? If not point them out. • (Day & night) Ask what the bug does? (wake up / go to bed) • Let the child say what is happening and ‘pretend’ to read, or actually read. • As the child becomes familiar with the contents, explore other • skills, such as colors of the rug, number of leaves, what is the bug • looking for? Food? Water? Do bugs live outside? • References • Burns, Bonnie. How to teach balanced reading & writing, 2nd Ed. 2006 • Phillips, Beth. Power Point.
