  1. Unit 1: Injuries & Treatments

  2. Warm-up • Complete a warm up drill sheet • Match the injury with the best description provided • Try to fill out as much as you can by yourself • Let’s see what you already know!

  3. Types of Wounds • Glance at the worksheet handed out • “avulsion”= a forcible tearing away or separation of a bodily structure or part as the result of injury • Ex: think of a shark bite, such as in the movie “Soul Surfer” • How many of these have you experienced yourself, or seen?

  4. Vocabulary • Immobilize: to secure, not allow movement • Vigilance: to be aware of surroundings and watchful for danger • Proactive: to control an expected happening

  5. Treatment for wounds • General 1st Aid for wounds: • Stop the bleeding • Prevent infection

  6. What’s going on here?

  7. Choking • Caused by an obstructed airway • Meaning something is preventing normal breathing • Ex: getting a hot dog chunk stuck in the throat • Universal sign • Abdominal thrusting • Frequently referred to as the Heimlich Maneuver (scientifically called reverse peristalsis)

  8. Procedures to assist • 1) Look for signs of distress/trouble breathing • 2) Ask if they are choking -if they say anything, they are not choking -ask if you can help -ask “are you pregnant?”  If they refuse help, you cannot help!! • 3) Stand behind them, legs apart in lunge position • If they pass out, they will fall back onto you

  9. 4)Wrap arms around torso (1 fist, the other hand rests on top) -Hands should be below the sternum and above the navel (belly button) • 5) Push interlocked hands up and inward to force item out of throat  Why do we NOT want the hands along the sternum? Why do we place the force on the “belly area”?

  10. Illustration of the Abdominal Thrusting/Heimlich Maneuver

  11. Role play practice • Within your groups, pretend to treat someone who is in distress • Choking • Wounds • DO NOT , DO NOT PERFORM REAL HEIMLICH MANEUVER ON YOUR CLASSMATES

  12. Closure • Let’s review some of the terms discussed today • Injuries and basic treatments • Why is it important to know how to treat certain wounds?
