Security or Big Brother? Biometricsin the Workplace
Social/Ethical Issues • Stakeholder: • Employees • Concern: • Privacy and Anonymity • Why is it a problem?
How it Works • Any one with a physiological or behavioral trait can serve a biometric characteristic as long as it satisfies the following: • Universality • Distinctiveness • Permanence • Collectability
How it Works Cont. • Fingerprint scanners specifically use either an optical scanner or a capacitance scanner. • In a workplace, the typical scanner they would use is an optical scanner. • The process is done by placing your finger on a glass plate, a CCD camera takes a picture, and compares whether the image is corresponding.

Advantages/Disadvantages • Advantages: • Eliminates “buddy punching”. (Employers) • High accuracy (Both) • Easy to use (Both) • It is the most economical biometric PC user authentication technique. (Employers) • It is one of the most developed biometrics. (Both)
Advantages/Disadvantages cont. • Disadvantages: • Many people think it is very intrusive. (Employees) • It can make mistakes if the fingers are dry or dirty. (Both) • The image is taken at 500 dots per inch (dpi) and the resolution is at 8 bits per pixel. (Employers)
Solution • Employers can explain that the entire fingerprint isn’t used. It becomes discarded and the coordinates are saved.
Solution Cont. • Strength: • Most employees would understand and be okay with it. • Weakness: • Employees could still feel skeptical about it. • Employers could solve this problem by giving them an alternate way to clock in. • For example, employers can use a camera to be sure they come in and have them use a pass code.
