What is Biometrics? • Ancient Greek: bios = “life”, metron = “measure” • The science of establishing the identity of an individual based on his/her physical or behavioral characteristics.* • Overall use of biometrics is for recognition through verification and identification • Often mistaken for Forensics • used in Forensics work, but different from *http://www.biometrics.dod.mil/SiteComponents/Glossary.aspx

Fact or Fiction • Biometrics • has been in existence and used since the 1920s • FICTION – been in use since 6000 B.C. • is how to teach machines to recognize people • FACT • is considered 100% secure and trustworthy • FICTION – can be fairly secure, but can been spoofed. • does not need a live body part to be accurate • FICTION - liveness tests such as pupil movement, pulse, and hand sweat

More Fact or Fiction • Fingerprint recognition does not keep an exact picture of your fingerprint • FACT • Movies such as Minority Report give an accurate portrayal of biometrics • FICTION – movies often glamorize and mislead types and techniques • Biometrics is currently being used in homes and schools across the country today • FACT

How to prepare for a career in Biometrics • High School • Strong in math and sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) • High GPA and ACT/SAT score (especially math scores) • Take as many Advanced Placement classes as possible (Chemistry, Calculus, English, Physics) • College/University • Important to look into programs to check for credentials, accreditation, and programs of study. • WVU Biometrics Systems • Curriculum at WVU

Keep in Mind • What you do can affect your future. • Examples: DUI, shoplifting, credit history, blogging, myspace, random postings on internet, etc • Because the Biometrics field involves high security jobs in some areas, you will probably be required to have a background check at some time • Therefore, what happens in high school and college may prevent you from living your dream job in the future.
