  3. Do Now • Directions: Identify the figurative language AND explain what it actually means. • 1.) His shirt was so big, his brother could wear it at the same time. • 2.) Her eyes were like diamonds. • 3.) The snow was a soft blanket completely covering the brown earth. • 4.) The birds whispered sweet melodies in my ears. • 5.) She was an angel dancing around the room. • 6.) The kitten is a tiny ball of cotton. • 7.) The two boys fought like cats and dogs. • 8.) I am so tired, I could sleep a year.

  6. Words Matrix!! A matrix is a pattern. In a group of four, you are going to receive 16 tiles (or pieces of paper). These 16 tiles fit together like a puzzle. Your job is to match them up. You will read a sentence with an underlined word. You must piece this tile together with the correct definition of the underlined word. You will do this until all of the 16 tiles are fit together correctly with each other. Let me show you an example…

Partner Practice ! • To practice text features and multiple step instructions, you and a partner are going to complete two exercises. • When you receive your workbook, you will read the following pages: • 57-59 (Complete questions on page 61) • 86 (Complete questions on page 87 AND 88) • You have about 20 minutes, and then we will go over the answers together. Please raise your hand if you have a question!!

  9. Persuasion Practice!! In a group, you will receive a handout that you are not going to write on. Answer the questions in your notebook. Even though there are only 5 questions, please take your time and really look through the advertisement!! You will have about 10-15 minutes, and then we will go over the answers.

Persuasion Continued… • In your same groups, you are going to create your own advertisement using all of the persuasion techniques that you know. • What you will do: • Decide what you want to sell or advertise • Decide what types of persuasion you want to use • Create your advertisement on the paper I give you • Present your advertisement to the class, and allow them to identify the persuasion techniques • Let me show you an example…

  11. Justin Bieber drinks milk, so you should too! All of the strong kids at school drink milk. If you want to be the best, you need to drink nutritious milk everyday! Either you drink milk, or you will never have enough calcium to make you strong.
