  7. English I Pre – AP Syllabus: The Highlights • This is a Pre-AP course, therefore, the College Board mandates that this course be rigorous in order to prepare you for college as well as AP. • Each six weeks, we will be studying various forms of literature that cross many genres. • We will be sharpening your writing skills and introducing you to variety of modes and strategies you have yet to discover. • Vocabulary will be an integral component of this course because it provides a foundation for you to be a stronger reader as well as writer. • We will also focus on developing your research skills.

  8. Syllabus Highlights: Grades • You will be given at least 2 grades every week. • Some of these grades will be minor while others will be major. • Major grades consist of tests, essays, presentations, and projects. These grades are worth 70% of your grade. • With each major grade, you will be given a due date. You are expected to get in your work before or on the due date. • You will ALWAYS be allowed to turn in your work early. Actually, I highly encourage it. • If you do miss a due date, you will be docked 20% of your grade, and each day that accumulates will add an additional 20% off.

  9. Syllabus Highlights continued: • Minor grades are daily grades, quizzes, short writing assignments, classroom participation, etc. • These make up 30% of your grade. • Quiz grades will be doubly weighted. • There are four assignments that will be ongoing throughout the semester that you will be graded on. They are: reading journals, VSG (vocabulary/syntax/grammar), and bell work.

  10. Tutorials • It is imperative that you attend tutorials in this class in order to be successful. • Tutorials give you the opportunity to work one on one with me whether it is due to poor grades, missing work, lack of understanding, or a desire to strengthen your skills. • Do not end up like this: http://youtu.be/VrSUe_m19FY

  11. Syllabus Highlights: Cheating and Plagiarism • Cheating and plagiarism is unacceptable behavior. • You will be given a zero for any assignment you plagiarize or cheat on along with a referral to the office. I will also take the liberty to call your parents to explain what has happened. • You are expected to complete your own work. Please do so.

  12. Syllabus Highlights: Communication • My e-mail and phone number are on the top of your syllabus. Please feel free to use these at any time to communicate with me. • I have 4th period conference. This time is set aside for me to help you and communicate with your parents. • Communication is vital for your success, so I will be setting up conferences with you and your parents in order to achieve that success.

  13. Syllabus Highlights: Journals • You will have 2 journals for this class. One of them is a reading journal, and the other one is a warm-up journal. • You will be writing in one of these journals nearly every single class day. • You will be graded on your journals every six weeks. • You will need to have your journals in class by no later than Friday (August 31st).

  14. Homework: • Contract signed by you and your parents. • Supplies • Letter of introduction

  15. Letter of Introduction • For homework, you will write a letter that will introduce yourself to me and your classmates. • You will be expected to read this letter out loud to me and your classmates. • This letter can be handwritten (very neatly) or typed. • You will be expected to use correct letter format. • This assignment is due tomorrow.

  17. Example Letter 5805 W. Bailey Boswell Rd. Fort Worth, TX 76179 August 27th, 2012 Dear Class, Hello. My name is Kylene Nash. I will be your Pre-AP English I teacher this year, and I am very excited about the journey that lies ahead of us. I feel very honored to be the facilitator on this expedition we are embarking upon, and I look forward to getting know each and every one of you. I feel very passionate about teaching, and I consider it to be a blessing to do what I love. This will be my fifth year at Boswell, and I have had the distinct privilege to have taught freshmen through seniors on this campus. I graduated from Louisiana State University in Shreveport with a Bachelor’s degree in English. It was while I was attending this university that I discovered the craft of teaching, and I have been hooked ever since. It is important that you know that I am a homegrown native of Louisiana. Therefore, I bleed purple and gold; scream out “Who Dat?” during football season; eat my food extra spicy; and can sport a country accent that will have you replying “yee haw”. You have now all been warned. Also, please note that I am a single mother of three beautiful children: Sean, Karlie, and Isaiah. This means that I will talk about them incessantly with a silly, goofy grin on my face. They are the loves of my life and my greatest accomplishment. When I’m not teaching or playing hide and go seek with my kids, you will find me either playing soccer; shaking my booty in hip hop class; kicking some serious tail in kick boxing class; covered in mud at a mud run; yukking it up with my friends; or quietly devouring a book. I believe in living life to the fullest and always with a smile on my face. Again, I really look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. Now, let’s go have a great year. Sincerely, Ms. Nash

  18. Have a Good Day! I’m looking forward to an exciting year with each of you!
