2. How good are you? • You will need to follow the instructions and work out what team you are refuting against (First three you are negative. Last three you are affirmative) • Topic: That the film is better than the book

3. Try this one. 20 marks • Affirmative Point 1: • The film clearly and effectively provides the viewer with a scene that the character is present in. The situation is usually indescribable by words, and a visual image is the only way to successfully portray a character or scene. An example of this is in Mrs Doubtfire, where Daniel is dressed up as Mrs Doubtfire. The facial expressions and body language is impossible to reconstruct in anyway in words, without over analysing and over exaggerating the scene, hence, destroying the book.

4. An easier one. 10 marks • Affirmative point 2: • The film is easier to understand because the people say it rather than write it. Sometimes, it is difficult to understand the context in which the characters are in, because the writers use figurative language which is extremely hard to understand.

5. Hard. 20 marks • Affirmative Point 3: • The film is more environmentally friendly than the book. The film does not waste any paper, whereas the book wastes plenty. Take the Harry Potter series for example. The total pages of all of the books subsides 3000 pages. More than one billion people have bought the series. It does not take a genius to work out that millions of trees have been cut down to accommodate the paper for the series. Films are on a disc, which do not cut down trees. Our environment is worse than ever, and all trees must be preserved to ensure we can live on this planet for a long time, just as God had intended us to.

6. Switch it up 20 marks • Negative Point 1: • The book clearly and accurately presents the reader with a plot and sub plot that is only conveyable by book. An example of this is in the text, Holes. The author, Sachar provides the reader with two subplots and a main plot. In the film, these subplots and the way they are introduced are awkward, and unsmooth. These plots are sometimes difficult to comprehend when they are shown to us visually.

7. Difficult to refute 20 marks • Negative Point 2: • Education is most definitely the most important point in a child’s life. Books and English Literature provide student’s with a sound understanding of general conversation, and it also prepares students with practice for national exams, such as NAPLAN. It is proven that if students read, they receive a minimum grade of a C in English. Those who don’t read will receive a minimum of E and a maximum of a B. The results for those who do not read is terrible, and it could be better if all students were to read the Harry Potter series, rather than just watch the films.

8. Easy... 10 marks • Negative Point 3: • Films are shorter and save us time. Books can take up to a month to read and films only take two hours to watch. They keep us engaged and entertained, and they are portable. Films are so much better than books.
