    1. The MDPS (motor driven power steering, safety steering column type) uses an electric motor to reduce the force necessary for steering; the steering system works independently of the motor. The MDPS control module controls the motor operation according to the data received from each sensor and via CAN (Controller Area Network). This ensures a more precise and faster control of the motor assist compared to conventional motor driven hydraulic systems. The components (steering angle sensor, torque sensor, failsafe relay, etc.) of the MDPS system are located in the steering column and in the MDPS assembly. Do no attempt to disassemble steering column and EPS unit for replacement or inspection. It is possible to replace the control module separately. The MDPS (motor driven power steering, safety steering column type) uses an electric motor to reduce the force necessary for steering; the steering system works independently of the motor. 2. MDPS The electronic power steering (MDPS) has two important advantages in comparison with the hydraulic power steering: The fuel consumption is reduced by 3~5%. The electronic power steering is 3~4kg lighter than a comparable hydraulic power steering. The electronic power steering used in the Sportage (SL) model is known from the Picanto (SA) Facelift model. However, the steering has been adapted to the increased load due to the higher vehicle weight. Manufacturer of the steering is Mando. 3. MDPS Please observe the following when handling the EPS: 1.Do not hit electronic parts; replace them with new parts, should they have been dropped or exposed to impacts. 2.Keep electronic parts away from heat and humidity. 3.Do not touch the terminals in order to prevent deformation and static charge. 4.Do not hit the motor and torque sensor components; replace them with new parts, should they have been dropped or exposed to impacts. 5.The connector has to be disconnected or connected with the ignition turned off. Please observe the following when handling the EPS: 1.Do not hit electronic parts; replace them with new parts, should they have been dropped or exposed to impacts.

    4. The MDPS control module is mounted directly on the MDPS assembly. Since this can be replaced separately, it has several connectors and the sensor and actuator wiring is freely accessible. These connectors are to be checked when an electrical fault is detected. After replacing the control module, the steering angle sensor has to be calibrated with the GDS. 6. MDPS A brushless AC motor is used. It is brushless due to the fact that it is not the coil which rotates in the motor, but the magnet connected to the motor shaft. Therefore, there is no need for brushes and collector, which provide contact to the rotating coil. How does this motor work? The brushless motor is, in principle, a brushed motor assembled "upside down". The windings (solenoids) are mounted in the motor housing while the rotor (motor shaft) carries the permanent magnets. Since the brushless motor has no collector, which would take care of the "automatic pole reversal in the right moment" enabling the motor to rotate at all, it cannot be operated any longer with direct current. This motor is operated with alternating current. It is equipped with three connections, matching the three collector segments. The alternating current makes sure that the turns are excited subsequently. This creates an electro-magnetic rotating field which - again through attraction and repulsion - starts the rotor motion. A controller takes care of letting the solenoids in the motor know when which solenoid must be excited. This controller is located in the MDPS control module. The motor is equipped with two motor position sensors to let the controller know the position of the motor shaft and which solenoid has to be activated next. 9. The torque sensor measures the steering forces exerted by the driver during steering. Based on the measuring values, the MDPS control module calculates the assist amount of the AC motor, depending on the state of the road surface and the vehicle speed. The sensor is mounted on the torsion bar in the steering column and uses a non-contact magnetic measurement method for measuring the torque. Due to the friction resistance between tires and road, the torsion bar is twisted to the same degree as the steering forces increase. The twisting grade is proportional to the exerted steering torque. The twist angle of the torsion bar is measured by using two concentric rings surrounding the torsion bar. One of the rings uses multi-pole permanent magnets to create static magnetic fields, which hit two Hall sensors by passing through "windows" in the second ring (rotor). The measured variable is the magnetic flux received by the two Hall sensors. The torque sensor measures the steering forces exerted by the driver during steering. 10. The steering angle sensor sends the position angle value of the steering wheel to the MDPS control module. The steering motion is transferred to the main gear via the steering column. The main gear drives the two sub gears 1 and 2. Each sub gear is equipped with an angle detection sensor which creates pulse-width modulated signals from the electric signals of the Hall ICs which are sent to the MDPS control module via the wiring. The MDPS control module calculates the steering angle from both PWM signals. This wiring is no CAN line! 17. Variant coding Variant coding makes it possible to adapt the motor assist of the steering to the customer needs of different continents. While in Korea customers desire a very smooth steering, Europeans and North Americans prefer a direct and tight steering. Of course, it is also important to adapt the motor assist to the installed engine. A heavy R engine requires more motor assist than the lighter U engine. The coding must be performed, when the MDPS control module or the entire MDPS assembly have been replaced. SAS calibration (steering angle sensor calibration) The calibration determines the straight-ahead position (zero position) of the steering wheel in the MDPS control module. The following events require a re-calibration: Replacing the MDPS assembly Replacing the MDPS control module Replacing the steering gear box Replacing the tie rods and other parts of the steering geometry After a vehicle alignment with adjustment Follow the instructions of the GDS tester. At the end, all trouble codes have to be deleted.Variant coding Variant coding makes it possible to adapt the motor assist of the steering to the customer needs of different continents.
