    5. Linnaeus In the late 18th century, Carolus Linnaeus developed a method of grouping organisms that is still used today. Linnaeus’s system was based on physical and structural similarities of organisms. He used a classification system called binomial nomenclature. The first word identifies the genus and the second the species.
