Management Defined and the Five Management Functions • Management – the process of accomplishing the goals of an organization through the effective use of people and resources • What do managers do? • Plan – analyze info, set goals, etc. • Organize – arrange work and resources to meet goals • Staff – obtaining, preparing, and compensating employees • Implement – direct and lead people to accomplish planned work • Control – sustaining and measuring accomplishments

  3. Management Styles • How a manager works with and involves employees • Tactical Management – directive and controlling. Make major decisions and maintain close contact with employees • Strategic Management – collaborative and inclusive. Expects employees to work without direct supervision. • Mixed Management – combined use of tactical and strategic.

  4. Leadership • The ability to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish important goals • Characteristics • Understanding • Objectivity • Honesty • Intelligent • Confident • Others?

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People – Steven Covey • Habit 1: Be Proactive - Take initiative and responsibility • Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind – identify your character and goals. Envision. • Habit 3: Put 1st Things 1st – Prioritize, plan and execute based on importance • Habit 4: Think Win-Win – Mutually beneficial agreements. Don’t be selfish • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood – Be genuine when listening. • Habit 6: Synergize – Connect the puzzle pieces to achieve the larger goal. • Habit7: Sharpen the Saw – Balance and renew your resources.   6. Assignment • Create your own 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. • In a Word document, prepare a logical and creative outline that describes your ideal traits of highly effective people. Each habit should include a description of the trait. Also, please begin your outline by writing a Mission Statement for your life.
