  2. An atom is the smallest particle of an elementthat can exist either alone or in combination. Elements are composed of only one type of atom.

  4. A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance and is composed of one or more atoms. These particles are two or more differing types of atoms bonded to one another.

  6. Pure Substances Both elements and compounds are pure substances, as they involve atoms bonded to other atoms.

  9. Solutions • Solutions are mixtures in which the components have dissolved. Most often they are liquids, but can be gasses or solids.
