The Parts of Speech. Today’s Objective… . Each student will review the parts of speech by creating notes and applying knowledge to practice exercises. The Noun. Definition: A word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. Examples:

  2. Today’s Objective… • Each student will review the parts of speech by creating notes and applying knowledge to practice exercises.

  3. The Noun • Definition: A word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. • Examples: • Persons: Jesse, teacher, chef, Dr. King • Places: Grand Canyon, city, California, library • Things: lamp, Nobel Prize, Golden Gate Bridge • Ideas: happiness, self-control, liberty, bravery

  4. The Pronoun • Definition: A word that is used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. • The word or word group that a pronoun stands for (or refers to) is called its antecedent. • Examples: • Frederick, have you turned in your report? • Walking the dog is fun, and it is good exercise. • Who asked that question? • I did not understand what you said.

  5. The Adjective • Definition: A word that is used to modify a noun or pronoun • Also known as descriptive words • Modifies a noun by telling what kind, which one, how much, or how many. • Examples: • Bean soup, springweather, gold coin, seventhgrade, Korean children, busy dentist, braided hair, five dollars, several days

  6. The Verb • A word that expresses action or a state of being. • Examples: • We celebrated the Chinese New Year yesterday. • The holiday is usually in February. • The owls hooted all night. • I believe you.

  7. The Adverb • A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Many adverbs end in –ly • Adverbs answer the following questions: *Where? *When? *How? *How often? *How much? *To what extent? • Examples: • The sprinter ran swiftly. • Dad will sometimes quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s speech. • Put the apples over there, and we will eat them later.

  8. The Preposition • A word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word. • Examples: • Aboard • About • Above • Across • After • Against • Along • Among • As • At • Before • Behind • By • During • Except • For • From • In • Instead • Like • Near • Off • On • Out • To • Unlike • With • Within • Without

  9. The Conjunction • A word that joins words or word groups. • Coordinating Conjunction: FANBOYS • For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So • Correlative Conjunctions: • Both…and *not only….but also • Either…or *whether….or • Neither…nor • Examples: • She has read the book, but she has not seen the movie. • Did Nancy call her, and has she called him back? • We asked Jim to be on time, yet he isn’t here.
