The 8 Parts of Speech… • A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. *Identify nouns by use of articles (a/an, the)
The 8 Parts of Speech… • A pronoun takes the place of a noun. • 3 Types: subject, object and possessive pronouns
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Subject Pronouns: I, we, you, she, he, they, it • Object Pronouns: me, us, you, her, him, them, it • Possessive Pronouns: my, our, your, her, his, their, its
The 8 Parts of Speech… • An adjective describes a noun. • Answers 1 of 3 questions: How many? (one, few) Which one? (this, that) What kind? (blue, pretty)
The 8 Parts of Speech… • A verb shows action or state of being. • Action: run, jump, study • Being: is, was
The 8 Parts of Speech… • An adverb describes verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. How? (usually ending in –ly; quickly) When? (soon, later, tomorrow) Where? (above, under, over)* To what degree? (extremely, very, too) • *Can be confused with prepositions
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Conjunctions “hook” together words, phrases and/or clauses. • Two types: coordinating and subordinating
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Coordinating Conjunctions: (FANBOYS) for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so *Used in compound sentences
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Subordinating Conjunction: Common examples: after, although, because, before, even though, if, since, than, though, till, unless, until, when, whereas, while *Used in complex sentences
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Prepositions are words that relate its object to another word in the sentence. *Think of the position of a squirrel & a tree: over, under, through, on, in, above, etc.
The 8 Parts of Speech… • Interjections are words that show emotion. • Examples: Ouch! Ugh!
