Space in Spain • Spainranksfifth in Europe in Space • Industrial capacities in a widerange of technologies • Someimportantmilestones: • FirstSpanishSatellite(1973) • FirstSpanishAstronaut (2003): Pedro Duque • Firstinstrumentfullydeveloped in Spain(SMOS missionlaunched in 2009) • CollaborationwithNASA (participationto MSL withsensors and highgainantenna) • Ongoingprojects: Ingenio and Paz

  4. Quick overlook on educational activities in Space • Space is part of several degrees, mainly Aerospace engineering but also: telecom engineering, physics and dedicated courses: • Master Universitario en Ciencia y Tecnología Desde el Espacio (Universidad de Alcalá) • Master in Space and Satellite Technology (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) • Master in Aerospace Science and Technology (Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña) • Master Part Time Aerospace MBA (Escuela de Organización Industrial) • Master en Teledetección (Universidad de Valencia, Oviedo, Zaragoza, Extremadura, Barcelona, etc.) • Several projects initiated to build space hardware with students: microsats and cubesats • Between 1989 and 2009 grants were made available (around 20 per year) for students to work in ESA, which served to feed the industrial sector and academia with high qualified experts.

  5. Relevantprojects Educationalexperimentsforthe ISS • Designedbystudents of thePolythecnicUniversity of Madrid • Mountedonthe Cervantes missionwhichtooktheSpanishastronaut Pedro Duque tothe ISS in 2003. • APIS • Demonstration of solid body rotation principles and to prepare a video for later use in education. • TEBAS • Analysis of closed containers enclosing solid spheres of different sizes, but the same total mass, when the assembly is subjected to an oscillatory movement.

  6. Relevantprojects Micro-satellites • UPM-Sat: A series of microsatellitesdevelopedbythePolytechnic of Madrid in cooperationwith INTA. • 40-50 kg and budget of 1-2 M€ • Firstsatellite: UPM/LB-Sat 1 launched in 1995 • Secondsatellite: UPM/Sat 2expectedto be launched in 2014.

  7. Relevantprojects Cubesats • Xatcobeo • DevelopedbytheUniversity of Vigo and launchedby VEGA in 2012 • 1Kg Approx. 10x10x10 cm • Two payloads: • a software defined reconfigurable radio (SRAD) • a system for measuring the amount of ionizing radiation (RDS). • There is also an experimental solar panel deployment system (PDM).
