Different Controls and Starters for Electric Motors Application

If you notice carefully, there is a plethora of appliances around you that runs on electric motors. Electric motors are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes. While all motors start working as soon as you supply them with electricity, some need additional circuit for starting safely. We are going to explore different controls and starters for Electric Motors.

  2. Introduction • If you notice carefully, there is a plethora of appliances around you that runs on electric motors. • Electric motors are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes. • While all motors start working as soon as you supply them with electricity, some need additional circuit for starting safely. • We are going to explore different controls and starters for Electric Motors.

  3. What is a Motor Starter or Control? A motor starter is an electronically operated switching device that starts a motor safely. It is used in high voltage motors to protect the motor from drawing excess current. There are two major parts in all motor starters: Contactor - A mechanism that allows current to pass through the motor Overload Protector - A mechanism that protects the motor from drawing too much current

  4. Types of Motor Starter or Control • There are two different types of motor starters: • Manual Starters These are operated manually activated using a switch, knob, or button • Magnetic Motor Starters By applying an electromagnetic pulse, the starter is activated • The right motor control depends on the type of motor: • DC • Single Phase • Three Phase

  6. VLT Drives It is a motor control drive developed by Danfoss. It is designed for variable speed control of all asynchronous motors and permanent magnet motors. It has a flexible, modular design concept to provide versatile control. The VLT AutomationDrive can be used with applications that need to perform high-precision positioning and synchronization operations. It is available in single and triple phase.

  7. Magnetic Motor Starters As mentioned earlier, the magnetic motor starter uses an electromagnetic pulse for starting or bring the motor to complete stop safely. These are only available for three phase motors as small as 5HP. There are further 5 subcategories: Direct-on-line Starter Rotor Resistance Starter Stator Resistance Starter Auto Transformer Starter Star Delta Starter

  8. Vacon 3 Phase Washdown Duty Drives Vacon 3 Phase Washdown Duty Drives are designed for extreme and harsh environments. They are used for everything from simple stand-alone applications to advanced system-level controls. It is mounted close to the motor to eliminate long motor lead problems.

  9. Pump Panels are the motor starter circuit for powering mechanical pumps It includes power components to control the pump motor, sensors to protect the pump, and pilot devices for operator control. Available in two types With circuit breaker With fuse Pump Panels
