  1. Task 4  PANDA 3Magnet design and integration of detectors • Milestones • Status • Outlook DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  2. Milestones & deliverables • Milestones • Deliverable: Technical Design Report DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  3. Decoupling of Solenoid and Dipole DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  4. Rectangular racetrack coils Return yoke Segmented Simple geometry(still being optimised re costs) Tracking drift chambers Design & test Mechanical engineering Mid-plane iron plate? Budgetary prices:Ansaldo, I: €1.7MDanfysik, DK: €1.6M All requirements fulfilled!(Milestone #2) Normal conducting clam shell Dipole DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  5. Solenoid • Crucial requirements • Magnetic field strength B = 2 T at interaction point & inner tracker • B field homogeneity ± 2 % in outer tracker region • Radial Br/B0 integral ≤ 2 mm in outer tracker region • Magnetic stray field < 1 mT in DIRC readout region DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  6. Genoa design • Choice: 3 SC coils wound inside a 5083 Al mandrel(cf. BaBar, Aleph) • Rutherford type cable compensated in Al(Milestone #1) • Minimum length of iron yoke  • Coil axially off-centre w/r yoke  approx. 100 t axial forces • Magnetic screening of DIRC PMT‘s (< 1mT) • Thin-walled iron doughnut + 1 correction coil • Price tag: €4.6M (budget price Ansaldo, I) • including iron yoke, excluding cryogenics • All requirements fulfilled (Milestones #2 and #3)! B/B ≤ 2% Bdr/B0 ≤ 2.2mm DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  7. Dubna design • Choice: Inner mandrel, 2 coreless coils • NbTi/Cu SC cable takes up hoop stress(Milestone #1) • He bath cooling • Longer iron yoke • Coil position more axially symmetricw/r yoke  12 t axial forces • Magnetic screening of DIRC PMT‘s(< 1 mT) • Massive iron endcap + 2 correction coils • All requirements fulfilled (Milestones #2 and #3)! DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06

  8. Outlook • All current Task 4, PANDA 3, milestones reached. • No show stoppers anticipated until end of play. • International review committee to evaluate Dubna vs. Genoa solenoid design in 2007. DIRACmidterm, GSI Darmstadt, 8/12/06
