  1. 3.1.6 – Application software used for presentation and communication of data Presentations

  2. The aim of this presentation is • To help you understand and describe the components that make up a digital presentation. • To help you understand how to compare the delivery of a presentation using a computer and projector and using projected slides and to be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of both technologies.

  3. Introduction • This is a very large presentation which contains lots of information. • However, you could sum up the contents simply like this: • What makes up a digital presentation. • Know the pros and cons of using them compared to other methods. • Don’t forget to look at the exam technique presentation to see how to answer questions!

  4. Digital Presentations • Digital presentations have allowed us to create far ‘richer’ presentations compared to the old methods (overhead projectors etc). • In this case, the term ‘rich’ refers to the multimedia that you can add: • Sound • Movies • Animations • These are things that you don’t get on static presentation mediums.

  5. Round up of features • Basic things: • Text • Images • These things can be found in all types of presentation. • Extra features: • Sound • Video • Animation • Hotspots • Hyperlinks • Buttons

  6. Text and Images • Both these things are used to help convey information. • Text should be appropriate to the target audience and images should be used to help convey the meaning of text.

  7. Multimedia • Sound, Video and Animations can be included in a presentation to help deliver more information to the viewers. • Sound can be used dynamically or run in the background and if used appropriately, they can emphasis the importance of a point. • Video can be used within the presentation. This means the deliverer does not need to break away from the presentation in order to show a video. • Animations can help the user understand a topic. The deliverer can choose the order in which items appear on the screen. This means they don’t have to make lots of slightly different slides.

  8. Slide Transitions • Slide transitions can also be animated to make your presentation more interesting. • They can be used to signify different sections of a presentation too. • Sounds could also be attached to the slide transitions to help signify changes in sections also.

  9. Hyperlinks, Buttons and Hotspots • Hyperlinks can be used to navigate between slides within the presentation, link to external files and also external web content. • Buttons can be used also to do the same thing. • Links are often used within text whilst buttons are used outside of body of the text. • E.g. click here to go to the next slide. Or click this button… Or click anywhere in this hotspot area.

  10. Question Time… • Read through pages 144 – 147 of the text book and then answer these questions: • Explain the advantages of using video in a presentation. • What is meant by slide transition? • Explain the disadvantages of using sound in a presentation. • How could hyperlinks be used in a presentation.

  11. Digital or Acetate? • Oh the dilemma… • Well believe it or not they both have their benefits… • And they both have their downsides….

  12. Digital or Acetate? - Pros

  13. Digital or Acetate? - Cons

  14. Question Time… • Compare the use of a computer and projector with the use of printed acetate and OHP and explain why a computer and projector is better than printed acetate and OHP.
