  2. Brown v. Board of Education • What interest me was that Linda Carol Brown lives in Topeka, Kansas has to walk across railroad tracks and take an old bus to get to school, even though there is a better school five blocks from her house. • What makes me upset is that Linda can't go to that school because she is black, and the schools in Topeka are segregated.

He would later go on to become a Supreme Court justice, serving from 1967 until 1991. But his greatest accomplishment of his life came in 1954 when he helped win the case of Brown v. Board of Education.

In fact he won thirteen of the fifteen cases that he argued before the nine justices. He did not know then that he would become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. He would serve on the Court for twenty-four years.

  7. Jim Crow Stories • What interests you? What interested me was that Jim Crow era was one of struggle not only for the victims of violence, discrimination, and poverty, but by those who worked to challenge (or promote) segregation in the South. • What makes you angry or upset? The key moments of the Jim Crow era impacted all of the United States. Certain events, such as anti-black riots, affected African Americans more drastically than other people; other developments, such as wars involving the American military, were universal. But universal events did not result in universal experiences. • What would you like to learn more about? I we will like to learn more about the events and how everything happened

  8. Richard Wright was an internationally acclaimed writer. His grandparents had been slaves and his father had abandoned his family when he was six. His mother worked as a cook to support the family. They suffered from extreme poverty, especially after his mother became sick. Wright wanted to write from a very young age and he was overjoyed when, at the age of 16, a local newspaper printed one of the first stories that he wrote. Although no one in his family encouraged his dream, he refused to give it up. He worked at a number of jobs in the South but was unable to accept the prejudices and insults of Jim Crow. Ferguson On June 7, 1892, 30-year-old Homer Plessy was jailed for sitting in the "White" car of the East Louisiana Railroad. Plessy could easily pass for white but under Louisiana law, he was considered black despite his light complexion and therefore required to sit in the "Colored" car. He was a Creole of Color, a term used to refer to black persons in New Orleans who traced some of their ancestors to the French, Spanish, and Caribbean settlers of Louisiana before it became part of the United States.

  12. Montgomery Bus Boycott • What interests you? What interested me was that Rosa parks refused on the to give up her bus seat so that a white man could sit. • What makes you angry or upset? What made me upset was that she got arrested just because she did not want to give up her sit for a white man • What would you like to learn more about? I will like to learn more about Rosa Parks and her life

  13. Rosa Parks, whose refusal to move to the back of a bus touched off the Montgomery bus boycott and the beginning of the civil rights movement, is fingerprinted by officer D.H. Lackey in Montgomery, Ala., Feb. 22, 1956. She was among some 100 people charged with violating segregation laws. Rosa Parks Caption to describe the artifact.

Rosa PARKS UNDER ARRESTED Fifty years ago today, the nine justices of the United States Supreme Court struck down a local ordinance in Montgomery, Alabama, that mandated segregated seating on municipal buses. Affirming the earlier decision of a panel of three Circuit Court of Appeals judges, the justices effectively overturned the famous 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision allowing for “separate but equal” accommodations in public conveyances. Browder v. Gayle, the new ruling, signaled the successful end of the nearly year-long Montgomery bus boycott and ushered in a new era in civil rights activism

  17. Central High • What interests you? What interested me was that in 1957, three years after the Supreme Court announced its decision in Brown v. Broad of Education to outlaw segregated schools, there still weren't any classrooms in the Deep South where blacks and whites sat together. • What makes you angry or upset? What made me upset is that black kid could not go to Central High before everything happen just because they were black but now more then 2,00, students black and white sit together • What would you like to learn more about? I will like to learn more about how everyone got together and how African American students got to talk to American students
