  1. Unit 15 and 16 Vocabulary 1. Globalization: the development of a global, or worldwide, society in which people, money, information, and goods flow fairly freely across national borders. 2. Tsunamis:a giant ocean wave, caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption, with great destructive power. 3. Refugees: people who have been forced to leave an area (usually their home country) because of war or because they face persecution based on race, religion, political opinion, or social grouping. 4. Military Junta:a government run by military generals after a military takeover. 5. Aboriginal: also referred to as Aborigines, are people whose ancestors were indigenous to the Australian continent and who are speculated to have migrated overtime, but at least 40,000 years ago, from Asia to Australia. 6. Ecotourism:a type of tourism that focuses on guided travel through natural areas.

  2. 7. Greenhouse Effect: the layer of gases that trap solar radiation causing earth’s average temperatures to be warmer than they would be without them. 8. Penal Colony:a colony designated as a place to send prisoners. 9. Antarctica Treaty: a collective agreement between many nations that establishes Antarctica as a scientific preserve with freedom of scientific investigation, and bans military activity on the continent. 10. Maori:the first settlers of New Zealand, who had migrated from Polynesia more than 1,000 years ago. 11. Micronesia: one of the three regions in Oceania, meaning tiny islands. 12. Great Barrier Reef:a 1,250 mile chain of more than 2,500 reefs and islands along Australia’s northeast coast. 13. Oceania: the group of islands in the Pacific, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia 14. Outback: the dry, unpopulated inland region of Australia 15. Polynesia: one of 3 regions in Oceania, meaning “many islands” 16. Melanesia: a region in Oceania, meaning “Black Islands”
