Chinese Philosophies

Philosophers wondered how to bring peace to the land during the Time of Warring States

Three philosophies, or studies of basic truths, were founded during this time

legalism

Legalism is the belief that rulers should use the legal system to force people to obey laws

Legalist believed that China needed a strong government

Legalism

Legalists also believed that human nature was wicked and people only do good when forced to do it

They believed in passing strict laws and harsh punishments were needed to make people afraid to do anything wrong

TSW 5 describe and compare the philosophies of Legalism, Confucianism and Daoism

TSW 6 summarize the life and accomplishments of Confucius

legalism1

Shang Yang wanted to force people to report on lawbreakers

Shang Yang believed that those who did not report on their neighbors wrongdoings should be cut in two

Legalism

Legalists did not want people to question the government so they arrested people who did

Legalists believed that rulers should burn books that contained different teachings than legalism

confucianism

Confucius lived from 551- 479 BC

Confucianism

confucianism1

Confucius’s ideas are found in the Analects

Confucius taught a code of proper conduct for people

Confucianism

He also believed that there were 5 main relationships:

father and son

husband and wife

elder brother and younger brother

friend and friend

ruler and subject

These relationships focused on proper conduct in the family and proper conduct in society

confucianism2

Confucius believed that good conduct and respect started at home

One important teaching was filial piety or teaching parents with respect

Confucius also worried about people’s behavior in society

Confucianism

If the ruler led in a right, moral way, the subject was to obey the ruler

If these behaviors were followed there would be peace in society

By following these rules the Chinese people found a way to avoid conflict

Confucius encouraged education which helped lay the groundwork for fair and skilled government officials

TSW 6 summarize the life and accomplishments of Confucius

daoism

Daoism was started with Laozi

There is debate if he even existed but if he did it was around 500 BC

Daoism

The book of Daoism is called the The Book of the Way of Virtue

They believe that a universal force or Dao guides all things

All creatures except humans live in harmony with this force.

Humans have to find their own way

TSW 5 describe and compare the philosophies of Legalism, Confucianism and Daoism

TSW 6 summarize the life and accomplishments of Confucius

daoism1

Daoists did not argue about good and bad they accepted things the way they were

They did not want to get involved in government

Daoism

Daoists wanted to understand nature and live in harmony with it

They believed in the Yin and Yang

The Yin (Black) stood for all that is cold, dark and mysterious

The Yang (White) stood for all that is warm, bright and light

These concepts are always changing and evolving but understanding the yin and yang helped people understand how they fit into the world
